1st Round Recap at 157 pounds

2017 NCAAs 1st Round

157-pound Recap

A total of five seeded wrestlers suffered setbacks at this weight on Thursday in St. Louis:

  • The highest of the seeds to lose was No. 6 Clay Ream of North Dakota State, who lost 8-4 to Paul Fox of Stanford;
  • Meanwhile, No. 12 Clark Glass of Oklahoma lost 3-2 to Penn’s May Bethea; Rutgers’ No. 13 John Van Brill lost to Illinois Kyle Langenderfer, 11-4 and No. 15 Archie Colgan of Wyoming lost 8-2 to Edinboro’s Chase Delande.

But the most exciting of the upsets came from B.J. Clagon, the 2015 All-American from Rider, who won two bouts in the first session of the 2017 NCAAs; beating Cal Poly’s Colt Shorts, 11-2 in the first round before upsetting Minnesota’s No. 8 seed Jake Shorts, 4-2.

Illinois’ Kyle Langenderfer did not pin Rutgers’ John Van Brill, but earned an 11-4 upset of the No. 13 seed. (Ginger Robinson photo)
