Volk, Wiley and Shumate become double winners with 16U Greco titles

FARGO, N.D. — Three wrestlers — Jore Volk at 100 pounds, John Wiley at 138 pounds and Seth Shumate at 182 pounds — all became double winners at the 2019 USMC 16U (Cadet) Nationals when the trio collected Greco-Roman championships Thursday afternoon at the Fargodome.

In the team race, Illinois led all the states with one champion — Brady Gillum at 160 pounds — while California and Minnesota each feature three champs: California’s Ray Ray Harris at 94 pounds, Brock Bobzien at 113 and Robert Perez III at 145, while Minnesota’s champs were Caleb Thoennes (88), Volk and Gavin Nelson (170).

Georgia, which finished third in the team race, produced its first two Cadet champs in Michael Kilic at 132 pounds and 152-pound Robert Weston, who was named the tournament’s OW.

The 49thannual event wraps up Friday afternoon when the Junior Greco-Roman tournament will start at 2 p.m. in the Dome.

2019 16U Greco-Roman Championship Match Highlights

88 — Caleb Thoennes (St. Cloud, Minnesota) dec  Hunter Taylor (Abilene, Kansas), 6-0— Thoennes, a sophomore at St. Michael-Albertville High School, scored all his points in the final 1:08 in the first period.

94  — Ray Ray Harris (Clovis, California) won by TF over Cael Hughes (Glencoe, Oklahoma),14-3 (3:39) — A four-pointer with 13 second left in the first period helped the sophomore from Buchanan High lead 9-1 at the break over the 2019 U16 freestyle champ.

100 — Jore Volk (Lakeville, Minnesota) dec. Benjamin Aranda (DeKalb, Illinois) 4-1— Volk became a double winner when the sophomore from Lakeville High scored a four-point midway through the first period.

106 — Christian Tanefeu (Bismarck, North Dakota) dec. Kyle Rice (New Plymouth, Idaho) 7-4 — Two seconds after Rice used a four-pointer to lead 4-3, Christian duplicated his twin brother, Winfred’s freestyle championship performance by scoring the final four points on two moves in the final 1:30/

113  — Brock Bobzien (Poway, California) won by TF over  Isaiah kainoa Medina (American Canyon, California), 10-0 (0:40)—Bobzien, who finished sixth in freestyle, scored all his points over a 26-second span in the first period.

120  — Nicolar Rivera (Stoughton, Wisconsin) won by TF over  Kayd Craig (Wendell, Idaho), 12-2 (3:13)— Rivera actually trailed 2-0 before scoring eight points in the final 30 seconds of the first frame.

126 — Ramon Ramos (Gilbert, Arizona) won by TF over Gavin Drexler (Stratford, Wisconsin) 13-2 (2:53)— Ramos, who finished 2ndat 126 in freestyle, led 5-2 at the break before the junior from Valiant High School opened the second period with a four-point throw.

132  — Michael Kilic (College Park, Georgia) dec. Jack Milos (Mt. Prospect, Illinois), 8-5— A four-pointer with 44 seconds left in the first gave the sophomore from Woodward Academy a 4-3 lead and then iced the victory with two takedowns in the second.

138 — John Wiley (Mustang, Oklahoma) Cody Chittum (Charleston, Tennessee) 4-1— Wiley, a sophomore, became a double winner when he iced the bout on a takedown with 11 seconds left over Chittum, who will wrestle next winter at Blair Academy.

145 — Robert Perez III (Long Beach, California) dec. Matthew Singleton (College Park, Georgia), 7-2 — Moments after Singleton, who also  finished 2ndin FS at 145, cut the margin to 3-2 with 42 seconds left, Perez, the Cadet World Team member ended any doubt with a four-pointer.

152 — Robert Weston (Marietta, Georgia) won by TF over Jared Simma (Kansas), 11-0 (1:42) — The match was scoreless for almost two minutes before Weston benefitted from a passivity call and scored 10 more points off five gutwrenches.

160  — Bradley Gillum (DeKalb, Illinois) vs Adam Ahrendsen (Clutier, Iowa), 6-3— Gillum, the sophomore from DeKalb High, trailed 1-0 at the break before scoring a four-pointer with 1:48 left in the bout.

170 — Gavin Nelson (Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota) dec.  Tate Picklo (Mustang, Oklahoma) 7-6— A four-pointer with 42 seconds left in the first period helped the freshman from Simley High School take a 7-0 lead and literally had to fight off his back as Picklo tried to rally in the second period.

182 — Nicholas Feldman (Quarryville, Pennsylvania) dec. Jack Darrah (Foristell, Missouri), 4-1— Feldman, the sophomore from Malvern Prep trailed 1-0 at the break before scoring all his points, including a takedown a minute into the bout.

195  — Seth Shumate (Galion, Ohio) won by TF over Isaiah Anderson (Pasco, Washington), 10-0 (1:10) — Shumate, the 16U freestyle champ became a double winner when he opened the bout with a four-pointer midway through the first period.

220 — Gage Cook (Granger, Washington) dec. Kolby Franklin (Du Bois, Pennsylvania) 6-4 — Cook, who finished eighth in the freestyle tournament caught Franklin, the 2019 16U freestyle champion in a four-pointer midway through the first period and scored another takedown with 21 seconds left to lead 6-1 at intermission.

285  — Jacob Barnes (McMinnville, Oregon) pinned Hayden Copass (Georgetown, Illinois), 4-0 (:31) Barnes, the 6-foot-5 junior from McMinnville High School, caught the 2019 16U freestyle champ in an underhook-overhook and pinned Copass
