NEWTON, Iowa — The top teams and individual wrestlers remained the same in WIN’s Jan. 18 rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic. But the weekly Division I rankings welcomed a dozen new wrestlers, including a pair of young Edinboro Fighting Scots.

Freshman Pat Lugo is rated No. 20 at 149 pounds, while

sophomore teammate Austin Matthews, who missed most of this season with an injury, is ranked No. 11 at 157. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Kyle Conel of Kent State is rated No. 16 at 197 pounds after defeating a pair of Top-20 wrestlers in Phil Wellington of Ohio University and Anthony Abro of Eastern Michigan.

Penn State and Oklahoma State, which both have six wrestlers ranked among the top 8 in their weight class, remain No. 1 and 2, respectively, in WIN’s Tournament Power Index with 91.5 and 84 TPI points. No. 3 Ohio State (with four Top-8 wrestlers) moved ahead of No. 4 Iowa (five) by a 73.5-71 TPI margin, followed by Illinois (four) with 70 points.

WIN’s TPI points are based on where the teams’ individuals are projected — based on WIN’s individual rankings — to finish in this season’s NCAA Championships, March 17-19, in New York City, with Top-8 finishers earning All-American points.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down as follows: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

In WIN’s dual-team rankings, the top six schools remained the same as last week, including No. 4 NC State, which improved its record to 17-0 with a victory over ACC-rival Virginia last weekend. Rejoining WIN’s dual-team rankings is Minnesota, which moved to No. 20 after defeating No. 12 Rutgers, 17-16 on Sunday. Among the other more notable duals last weekend saw No. 10 Ohio State defeat No. 7 Nebraska, 21-17, as 2015 World freestyle champion Kyle Snyder made his season debut at heavyweight with a 20-9 major decision over Colin Jensen.
