The Allen County War Memorial provided the site of the 2015 NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals, Jan. 9-10, when Maryville University upset top-ranked and defending duals champion Notre Dame College for the Div. II title … and four other schools repeated as team champions in this event that featured all but Division I programs.

Repeating as team champions were Wartburg College (Iowa) in Div. III, Grand View (Iowa) in NAIA, Clackamas Community College in NJCAA and King University (Tenn.) in women’s wrestling.

Maryville University of St. Louis, Mo., won five of the ten individual matches that were contested in the championship dual against top-ranked Notre Dame of Solon, Ohio, and trailed 15-9 heading into the final two bouts before 197-pound Ryan Beltz and heavyweight Donnell Walker won their matches to clinch the Saints’ 16-15 victory over the Falcons in Ft. Wayne, Ind., on Jan. 10.

Beltz’s 12-4 major decision over Garrett Linton was the only bout with bonus point and helped set up the winning team margin once Walker edged Logan Rimmer, 4-2.

Among Maryville’s bigger wins came at 149 pounds, where top-ranked Kennan Hagerty defeated No. 6 Andrew Bannister, 7-3. Hagerty, a junior from Blue Springs, Mo., won all four of his matches in the tournament, including a 3-1 sudden victory over third-ranked Terrel Wilbourn of Lindenwood to help his team win the quarterfinal, 22-9.

Maryville’s other wins came in the first round against Lake Erie College (Ohio), 24-18, and in the semifinals against St. Cloud State, 18-15. Maryville trailed Lake College 12-0 before the Saints won five straight and six of the final seven matches, including a 58-second fall by Zeb Wahle at 174 pounds.

The Saints also trailed St. Cloud 13-6 after 157 pounds before Maryville won four straight bouts.

“Winning this championship took a total team effort,” said coach Mike Denney. “It was one of the most exciting championships I have been part of in my coaching career! We are pleased to be able to bring home a national championship for Maryville University.”

Wartburg captures fifth straight Div. III Duals championship

nat duals champs div III wartburgWinning a NWCA National Duals championship or even appearing in the finals of this annual event was nothing new before the Knights eventually won a fifth-straight team title and ninth overall on Jan. 10.

But winning four duals, including a 20-13 championship dual over No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater, was not something many expected outside of Waverly, Iowa, considering the Knights were ranked No. 10 in the preseason poll and lost 18-16 to Wisconsin-LaCrosse, Dec. 6, at the LaCrosse Duals.

But since then, Wartburg has won nine straight duals and outscored its four opponents in the National Duals by a 116-34 margin and reached the National Duals final a 14th straight year.

Among the Knights who won four individual matches in the two-day event were 133-pound Connor Campo, ranked sixth nationally before the Duals, and No. 5 heavyweight Ben Nagle, who each led Wartburg with 18 wins on the season.

Nagle clinched Wartburg’s most recent Duals championship with a 5-2 decision against eighth-ranked Anthony Edgren of Whitewater after UWW’s top-ranked Shane Siefert scored an 11-2 major decision over Wartburg’s Bryan Levsen to pull his team within 17-13 before the final bout.

Grand View beats Southern Oregon for fourth straight NAIA duals title

nat duals champ naia grand viewGrand View (Iowa) and Southern Oregon are the top two ranked schools in the NAIA division of college wrestling. And these schools had no trouble dominating their first three matches at the National Duals in Ft. Wayne, Ind., as the Knights outscored its three foes, 116-11, and the Raiders were nearly as dominant in their first three bouts, 107-21, to set up a championship meeting between these schools.

But when it came to settling what was the better dual team, it was the Knights who won six of the ten individual matches to prevail 23-13 and earn the Des Moines, Iowa school its fourth straight team championship.

Among the most notable victories for Grand View came at 149 pounds where top-ranked Gustavo Martinez edged third-ranked Tyler Cowger, 2-1; and at 184 pounds where No. 1-ranked Christian Mays scored a takedown with seven seconds left to beat fourth-ranked Jake Abrams.

A total of five top-ranked wrestlers competed and all won in the final dual of the two-day tournament:

  • 125-pound Ryan Finch of Grand View dominated Coleman Johns, 18-3;
  • 141-pound Brandon Wright of Grand View was equally impressive against Trevor Hancock, 24-9;

Clackamas overcame lack of sleep and NE Oklahoma to win NJCAA duals title

nat duals champ juco clackamasThe Clackamas Community College wrestling team faced the longest trip to the NWCA National Duals, but the 2,300 mile trip was made even worse when the Cougars’ flight from Chicago to Ft. Wayne was delayed eight hours and once re-routed to Indianapolis because of an ice storm that hit the Midwest on Jan. 8.

But the Clackamas squad arrived with less than eight hours before the teams weighed in; leaving the many of the Cougars with less than two hours of sleep before competition began.

Apparently jet lag and sleep deprivation did little to affect this team, which defeated four schools, including defending JUCO national champion Northeast Oklahoma A&M, 26-18, in the final dual to capture a second straight National Duals title and third in the past five years.

“It was a complete mental toughness battle as we had almost no sleep and no time to waste,” said coach Joshn Rhoden.  “I can’t believe how well we did based on our circumstance.  It looked pretty bleak at several points but our guys wanted to succeed and wanted to win this tournament together and in the end that’s exactly what they did.”

To reach the finals, Rhoden’s group had to defeat Rochester Community and Technical College, 30-18, Iowa Lakes, 31-16 and Ellsworth (Iowa), 19-18. In the win against Ellsworth, Clackamas won five of the first seven bouts to lead 19-6, but saw the team victory come down to the final bout after Clackamas’ third-ranked Ihoghama Odighizuwa was forced to injury default against sixth-ranked Sharold Wilson in the 197-pound bout. Ellsworth’s Dalonte Holland, ranked 10th before the National Duals, upset No. 6 John Morin, 4-3, but was not enough to stop Clackamas.

In the finals, both Korbin Levin and Lawrence Otero of Clackama pinned their foes to help the Cougars 22-6 lead … and this time Odighizuwa clinched the dual championship when he blanked Josh Latham, 8-0.

King battles out of hole to win second straight women’s championship

nat duals champ wms kingKing University left Ft. Wayne, Ind., on Jan. 10 with a second straight women’s championship at the NCWA National Duals, but it only happened after the Tornadoes battled back from a 11-0 deficit to beat Oklahoma City, 24-17.

After only giving up just six points in the first two dual victories over Missouri Baptist and McKendree, the Tornadoes were down nearly a dozen points when OKC’s Emily Webster scored a 13-2 technical fall in her 101-pound freestyle bout and Cody Pfau pinned Breonnah Neal at 109 pounds.

But King — located in Bristol, Tenn. —won the next five matches, including technical falls by Haley Augello (116), Sarah Hildebrandt (130) and Amanda Hendey (143) — to help the Tornadoes take a 20-14 lead before Julia Salata clinched the dual with a 10-0 technical fall at 170 pounds over Yavonne Galindo.
