Upsets at Midlands & Scuffle lead to many changes in Jan. 5 Ranks
Jan. 5, 2015
NEWTON, Iowa —There were plenty of upsets in the recent Midlands and Southern Scuffle college wrestling tournaments, which in turn have led to many changes in WIN’s Jan. 5, 2015 Tournament Power Index Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.
Among the biggest changes saw Minnesota’s Chris Dardanes, Cornell’s Gabe Dean and NC State’s Nick Gwiazdowski take over the top spots at 133, 184 and heavyweight, respectively.
The results from the those two tournaments, which took place in Evanston, Ill. (Dec. 29-30) and Chattanooga, Tenn. (Jan. 1-2) also saw several lower or unranked wrestlers move into the Top 10 of their weight classes.
Among the more notable moves came at 125 pounds, where Chattanooga’s Sean Boyle (above) moved from No. 20 to 8, and 157 where a trio of unranked wrestlers moved into the top 10: Virginia Tech’s Nick Brascetta (No. 6), The Citadel’s Aaron Walker (No. 8) and Penn State’s Dylan Ness (No. 9).
In WIN’s team rankings, the University of Minnesota remains No. 1 in the Tournament Power Index (TPI) and Team Dual Meet rankings after winning six titles at the Aloha Open in Honolulu, Hawaii, Dec. 30.
The University of Iowa, which set a Midlands record for points in winning the tournament for a 24th time, is ranked No. 2 in both polls.
The University of Missouri, which saw three wrestlers — Alan Waters (125), Lavion Mayes (141) and J’den Cox (197) — win championships at the Southern Scuffle has moved into third place in the TPI.
WIN’s TPI is based on where a school is projected to finish in next March’s NCAA Division I Championships in St. Louis, based on schools’ currently ranked individuals and not on a school’s dual-meet record.
Point totals are broken down by the following projected placements: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5); 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
WIN’s next updated TPI, Team Dual and Individual rankings will be announced on Monday, Jan. 12, 2015.
