Chun avenges 2008 Olympic loss for bronze medal to highlight Day 1 of women’s freestyle

Four years ago, Clarissa Chun appeared in her first Olympics, but just missed out on a bronze medal when Ukraine’s Irini Merleni pinned her in Beijing. Fast forward to the first day of women’s freestyle competition in the London Games where the 30-year-old native of Hawaii defeated the Ukrainian to capture the first Olympic medal by USA Wrestling over the past four days.

Chun’s victory took away some of the pain of seeing 2010 World silver medalist Elena Pirozhkova lose a first-round match to an unheralded Lithuania wrestler.
