WIN’s Nov. 21 Rankings set stage for tomorrow’s NWCA All-Star Meet

NEWTON, Iowa — The lineups are set for Tuesday’s NWCA All-Star Classic in Austin, Texas, and several of those match-ups will be between wrestlers who are ranked in the Top 5 of their weight class in WIN Magazine’s Nov. 21 Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.
The most notable matches will come at 174 pounds, where Penn State’s No. 1 Carter Starocci will take on Virginia Tech’s No. 2 Mekhi Lewis in a battle between two NCAA champions which is also a rematch of the 2022 NCAA final where the Nittany Lion prevailed in overtime.
Penn State, which is ranked No. 1 as a team in WIN’s Tournament Power Index and Dual Rankings will send two other wrestlers to the All-Star Classic. That includes two-time NCAA champ Aaron Brooks, ranked No. 1 at 184 pounds, who will meet Northern Iowa’s No. 2-ranked Parker Keckeisen. Meanwhile, Penn State’s No. 2-ranked heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet will take on Iowa’s No. 4-ranked Anthony Cassioppi.
Iowa remains No. 2 behind Penn State in both the TPI and Dual rankings, while there is a difference among the other teams in the two different team rankings. Ohio State, Arizona State and Missouri ranked third, fourth and five in the Dual Rankings, while Arizona State, Missouri and Cornell hold those spots in the TPI which rates teams based on their placement potential for the NCAA Championships at this point in the season.
WIN’s individual ranking are actually a projection of where individuals will finish at their respective weight classes during next March’s Division I Championships in Tulsa, Okla. WIN’s Tournament Power Index is a total of a team’s possible NCAA points if their wrestlers finished where they are currently ranked. The following is a breakdown of the points from the TPI, based on a wrestler’s ranking: 20 for 1st, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by 1.5 points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and 1 point for those ranked 17-20.
