Photo: Alexis Janiak (left) and Cadence Diduch each earned championships in two different divisions in the 2021 16U/Junior Nationals. The native of Illinois are expected to compete in this summer’s Junior Women’s Freestyle tournament in Fargo on July 19-20.

Many of the girls who wrestle at USA Wrestling’s 16U/Junior Nationals in Fargo every summer compete in both divisions in the week-long event in Fargo, N.D. That will be the case in this summer’s event that will take place July 16-22 in the Fargodome.

That includes at 127 pounds, where a pair of 2021 Fargo champs … and natives of Illinois — Alexis Janiak and Cadence Diduch — could face each other in the upcoming Junior Women’s Freestyle tournament that will take place July 19-20.

Janiak is coming off her senior year at Plainfield South High School, where she won an Illinois state championship this past February in the inaugural girls state tournament at 130 pounds. Last summer, she defeat4ed Sofia Macaluso of New York for the 127-pound Junior title.

Diduch, who will also compete in this year’s 16U Women’s Freestyle tourney,  was a sophomore at Freeport High School in Illinois. She became the first female to win a NIC-10 conference championship for the boy’s team. Last year, she won a 16U Fargo championship at 117 pounds in women’s freestyle.

Preliminary numbers indicated that 971 girls from 47 states have entered this year’s Junior Women’s tournament.

The source for these numbers can be found in Jason Bryant’s MatTalk Online Fargo Almanac. (https://mattalkonline.gumroad.com/l/fargoguide)

Other returning champs from the 2021 Junior Women’s tournament includes a pair of California natives in Savannah Gomez, who will compete at 144 pounds this July after winning a Fargo trophy at 138 pounds last summer, and Sam Calkins, who is dropping down to 180 this summer after winning a Junior title at 200 pounds in 2021. Meanwhile Oregon’s Destiny Rodriquez, who won a championship at 144 will wrestle at 152 this July, while Michigan’s Eliana Bommarito will return to defend her 225-pound title from last summer.

Meanwhile there are five other women, who won 16U championships last summer, who are entered in the 2022 Junior Women’s Nationals: Florida’s Valarie Solorio (100 pounds), Indiana’s Makenzie Smith (106), New York’s Alessandra Elliott (138), Maryland’s Nebi Tsarni (144), and Missouri’s Catherine Dutton (200).

Overall, a record 7,100 young wrestlers will compete in the six tourneys in the week-long event that once again will be held in the Fargodome on the campus of North Dakota State University.

The following is a schedule for all six tournaments. Click on a separate tourney to view a preview of that competition. 16U and Junior previews in men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman will be available next week.:
