Second Round Notes

  • Top-ranked Spencer Lee of Iowa advanced to the quarterfinals as expected as the two-time champion defeated West Virginia’s Killian Cardinale, 15-5 for his second bonus point victory of the tournament. But the Mountaineer showed that the Hawkeye All-American is human by scoring a pair of takedowns: one in the second period to cut margin to 10-2 and the second coming in the third period after Lee led 13-3.
  • Lee will face Purdue’s Devin Schroeder in Friday morning’s quarterfinals after the Boilermaker edged Michigan State’s Rayvon Foley, 2-1. Lee is coming of a Big Ten championship win over Schroder two weeks ago.
  • Northern Iowa’s edged Northwestern’s Michael DeAugustino, 2-0, as the No. 8 seed scored his points off a third-period escape and a riding point after controlling the Wildcat the entire second period.
  • Arizona State’s No. 3 Brandon Courtney edged Wisconsin’s Eric Barnett, 9-7. The Sun Devil used three first-period takedowns to lead 6-3 and was up 8-4 entering the third period when the Badger benefitted from a pair of stalling points against the Sun Devil.
  • NC State’s Jakob Camacho advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Michigan’s Dylan Ragusin, 10-8, but not before the Wolverine freshman scored a pair of nearfall points against the Wolfpack wrestler. Camacho led 4-3 after two periods before scoring a takedown and reversal in the third period.
