#1 Penn State edges #2 Ohio State in WIN’s Feb. 5 Rankings

Feb. 5, 2018

NEWTON, Iowa — One point separated Penn State and Ohio State in a dual last weekend and the top two schools in NCAA Division I retained their positions — with almost equally-close ranking points — in WIN’s Feb. 5, 2018 Tournament Power Index, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

The Nittany Lions, who edged the Buckeyes, 19-18, last Saturday, continue to feature eight ranked wrestlers and lead the field with 124 TPI points. Ohio State, with 10 ranked wrestlers, has nine in the Top 8, and is ranked second with 120.5 points.

WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI) awards team points for individuals ranked in the respective weight classes based on how many potential All-Americans each school could produce at the 2018 NCAA Championships this March. WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

All 10 top-ranked wrestlers retained their No. 1 ranking, including Ohio State’s 197-pound Kollin Moore (17-1), despite a 6-3 road loss to Penn State’s Anthony Cassar. WIN considers all of the wrestlers’ quality wins vs. losses over the entire year. And at this point in the season at 197 pounds, the positioning of the wrestlers is complex. No. 2 Jared Haught (Virginia Tech) was pinned this year by Moore and No. 7 Willie Miklus (Missouri). No. 3 Preston Weigel (Oklahoma State) has a win over No. 5 Mike Macchiavello (NC State) but a loss against Miklus. And No. 4 Cassar, who has been sharing the starting spot for Penn State with teammate and Southern Scuffle champ Shakur Rasheed, has a win over No. 9 Frank Mattiace of Penn, but suffered losses to Bucknell’s Garrett Hoffman and Northern Iowa’s No. 13 Jacob Holschlag. So, despite his first loss of the year, Moore stays No. 1.
