Iowa & Penn State make biggest moves in WIN’s Jan. 15 Rankings

By
Updated: January 15, 2018

NEWTON, IOWA — Penn State and Iowa recently took the redshirts off talented freshmen with the last name Lee and both the Nittany Lions and Hawkeyes used impressive victories to move up in WIN’s Jan. 15, 2018 Tournament Power Index and Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

The Nittany Lions, winners of six of the last seven NCAA team championships, defeated No. 3 Michigan last weekend to regain the top spot with 124 TPI points. Eight Penn State wrestlers are ranked and all eight are rated in the Top 8 of their weight class, which would earn them All-American honors this March in Cleveland, Ohio. Among those talented Nittany Lions is true freshman Nick Lee, who is ranked No. 6 at 141 after Penn State removed his redshirt last weekend.

WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI) awards teams points for individuals ranked in the respective weight classes based on how many potential All-Americans each school could produce at the 2018 NCAA Championships this March. WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

Penn State moved ahead of Ohio State, which was ranked No. 1 the last two WIN rankings. The Buckeyes still feature a ranked wrestler in all ten weight classes, including eight in the Top 8, and earned 121 TPI points.

Iowa, which upset Oklahoma State last Sunday, moved up two spots to No. 4 this week with 71 TPI points, just 3.5 points behind Michigan’s 74.5 TPI points. The Hawkeyes feature seven ranked wrestlers, including six in the Top 8 of their weight class. That includes 125-pound Spencer Lee, who is ranked No. 8.

The Wolverines feature eight ranked wrestlers, six in the Top 8 of their weight class.

The Hawkeyes and Wolverines will meet in a dual meet on January 27 in Iowa City. Ohio State will host Iowa on January 21.

Regarding WIN’s dual-team rankings, Penn State remains No. 1 ahead of Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa and NC State. Arizona State moved up one spot to No. 9 after winning last weekend’s Virginia Duals.
