WIN’s Jan. 9 Rankings: Get ready for Big Duals

NEWTON, Iowa — For the next three weeks, the top four schools in WIN’s Jan. 9 rankings and Tournament Power Index, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic, will meet each other, beginning with this Sunday’s dual between top-ranked Oklahoma State and No. 3 Iowa.
This will be the first dual of 2017 for the Cowboys, whose last competition was winning the 2017 Southern Scuffle championship on Jan. 2. The Hawkeyes are coming off road victories at Michigan and Michigan State.
Meanwhile in coming weeks, the Hawkeyes will play host to both No. 2 Penn State on Jan. 20 and No. 4 Ohio State on Jan. 27. The Nittany Lions are coming off road wins at Minnesota and Nebraska, while Ohio State defeated Wisconsin last weekend in Madison. The Buckeyes’ Jan. 8 dual with Rutgers was postponed until Feb. 6 because of travel difficulties.
The Nittany Lions, the defending NCAA champs, will also face Ohio State in a road dual in Columbus, Ohio, on Feb. 3.
In WIN’s Jan. 9 Tournament Power Index, Oklahoma State (with 100 TPI points) and Penn State (95.5) remain the top two teams as the Cowboys feature a ranked wrestler at all ten weights, compared to nine by the Nittany Lions. These two teams are not scheduled for a dual meet this season unless they are matched up the weekend of Feb. 17-19 in the NWCA National Duals Series, where the top eight Big Ten teams will face highly-ranked non-Big Ten teams.
WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
