Top 4 Teams in Dec. 19 Ranks Separated by 7 Points

By
Updated: December 19, 2016

NEWTON, Iowa — NCAA Division I wrestling has completed its first semester and four teams have established themselves as front-runners to win this season’s NCAA Championships with Oklahoma State, Iowa, Penn State and Ohio State only separated by seven points in WIN’s Dec. 19, 2016 Tournament Power Index, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

Oklahoma State (5-0), coming off a dual victory over Cornell and winning the Reno Tournament of Champion with its reserve wrestlers last weekend, remain WIN’s top-ranked team in both WIN’s Dual Rankings and Tournament Power Index. The Cowboys earned 90.5 points in the TPI, based on 10 ranked wrestlers and seven rated among the Top 8 (predicting 2017 All-Americans) in their weight class.

Iowa (5-0) has moved up to No. 2 in the TPI with 88 points as all seven ranked wrestlers are rated among the Top 8.

Penn State (4-0), which was unable to compete in the Reno TOC because of travel difficulties, remains No. 2 in the Dual Rankings and No. 3 in the TPI with 86.5 points. The defending NCAA champions feature eight ranked wrestlers and six in the Top 8.

Ohio State (4-0) is ranked No. 4 in both WIN’s Dual-Team Rankings and Tournament Power Index with 83.5 points. Of the seven Buckeyes ranked this week, six are listed among the Top 8.

The TPI is based on the schools’ wrestlers who are rated in WIN’s individual rankings, predicting possible All-American placement (top eight finishers per weight) in the 2017 NCAA Championships, which will be held March 16-18 in St. Louis.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

WIN’s next Tournament Power Index, Dual and Individual rankings will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017.
