Cowboys edge past Hawks & Lions in Dec. 21 Ranks

By
Updated: December 21, 2015

NEWTON, Iowa — As the top NCAA Division I teams prepare to compete in this year’s Midlands and Southern Scuffle tournaments over the holidays, Oklahoma State has taken over the top spot and less than ten points separates the top three schools in WIN’s Dec. 21 Tournament Power Index (TPI) and rankings.

The Cowboys have moved past the Iowa Hawkeyes with 90 TPI points. Both Iowa and No. 3 Penn State earned 88.5 and 80.5 points, respectively. The Cowboys and Nittany Lions will head to Chattanooga, Jan. 1-2, for the Southern Scuffle, while Iowa will compete in the 53rd Midlands, Dec. 29-30, in Evanston, Ill.

WIN’s TPI points are based on where the teams’ individuals are projected — based on WIN’s individual rankings — to finish in this season’s NCAA Championships, March 17-19, in New York City, with Top 8 finishers earning All-American points. At this point in the season, Oklahoma State, Iowa and Penn State are projected to have six wrestlers finish among the top eight places in their weight classes, as is No. 4 Virginia Tech.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down as follows: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

The Nittany Lions (6-0) remain No. 1 in WIN’s Dual Team Rankings, followed by Iowa (8-0), Virginia Tech (3-1), NC State (11-0), Missouri (5-0) and Oklahoma State (4-2).
