McMullan & Schiller take over top spots in WIN’s Nov. 10 Rankings
Nov. 10, 2014
NEWTON, Iowa — Minnesota’s Scott Schiller and Northwestern’s Mike McMullan, fresh off big victories over defending national champs at this year’s NWCA All-Star Classic, have taken over the top spots at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, in the latest WIN individual rankings and Tournament Power Index, presented by Cliff Keen.
Minnesota, which features five wrestlers ranked in the Top 3 of their weight classes — including a pair of other top-ranked wrestlers, 157-pound Dylan Ness and 174-pound Logan Storley — remain No. 1 in WIN’s Tournament Power Index.
The Gophers scored 92.5 points in WIN’s TPI, which is 15.5 points more than second place Iowa, which is projected to finish this season with eight All-Americans. Rounding out the top five schools are Cornell (5/68), Ohio State (6/62.5) and Northwestern (3/54.5).
Point totals associated with individual rankings are as followed: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5); 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
WIN also includes events like the NWCA All-Star Classic, held Nov. 1 in Philadelphia, when considering rankings. In this year’s event, hosted by Penn, Schiller defeated Missouri’s J’den Cox, 5-3 in sudden victory at 197 pounds, while McMullan defeated NC State’s Nick Gwiazdowski, 8-4, in their heavyweight bout.
Among the newcomers in this week’s rankings are Ohio State’s freshman Kyle Snyder, who won the 197-pound championship at the Nov. 2 Michigan State Open, and Air Force senior Jesse Stafford, who upset Wisconsin’s Isaac Jordan to win the Wyoming Cowboy Open at 165 pounds last weekend.
WIN will announce a separate Dual Team ranking, beginning Dec. 1. WIN’s TPI will be updated in early November once line-ups are set and will continue on a weekly basis through the NCAA Division I qualifying tournaments in early March.
WIN’s Nov. 10, 2014 Tournament Power Index (TPI)
