141-pound Recap

Penn State, needed a team pick-me-up after 125-pound Nick Suriano was unable to wrestle because of an injury, got one from senior — and unseeded — Jimmy Guilibon, a former All-American who opened up his final NCAA tournament with an 18-3 technical fall over Michigan State’s No. 13 seed Javier Gasca.

The only other seeded wrestler to lose at this weight class was North Carolina’s Joey Ward, who was pinned by Oregon State’s Jack Hathaway in 3:28.

Several of the top seeds go a challenge in their first-round matches, including defending national champ Dean Heil, who held on to edge Brock Zacherl of Clarion, 6-5.

Meanwhile, both No. 3 Joey McKenna of Stanford and No. 4 Matt Kolodzik of Princeton, also settled for decisions. The Cardinal sophomore, who finished third last year, blanked Binghamton’s Dylan Caruana, 6-0, while the Princeton freshman defeated Maryland’s Ryan Diehl, 8-3
