Has there ever been a better time or era in USA Wrestling than now … after the men’s and women’s freestyle teams combined to win 15 overall medals, including seven gold medals, in 20 weight classes at the 2022 UWW World Championships the past month in Belgrade, Serbia?

There were wall-to-wall storylines coming out of the Worlds for Team USA. The top one was Jordan Burroughs’ historic seventh World/Olympic title, breaking John Smith’s all-time U.S. record of six.

You will find many stories on this historic event … as well as preseason previews of the top college and high school programs and wrestlers … in the latest issue of WIN Magazine, which was recently printed and is also now available in digital form.

Below is a list of the stories that appeared in the October 6 issue of WIN Magazine:

Page 8 – ON TOP OF THE WORLD  – Perhaps there was no one in Belgrade, Serbia, who could better compare the success of the 2022 USA freestyle teams than Bruce Baumgartner, who was part of other highly-successful teams in the 1980s and ‘90s.

Page 10 – MAGNIFICENT SEVEN – Fittingly, there were seven members of Jordan Burroughs’ family on the championship stand in Serbia, who will have a lifetime to share how he won seven (and perhaps more) World/Olympic titles since 2011.

Page 16 – YOUNG SHOULDERS FOR THE LOAD – The United States women’s freestyle team once again had a dominant World Championships with three gold and seven overall medals, but more importantly showed a bright future with 18-year-old Amit Elor.

Page 20 – GRECO-ROMAN LOOKS FOR NEW ATTITUDE – Ivan Ivanov, now head of the USA Greco-Roman program, will soon be part of hiring a new Greco coach, but first wants to create a better environment for Greco wrestlers, who went medal-less at the 2022 Worlds.

Page 22 – WIN MAGAZINE’S PRE-SEASON COLLEGE TPI  – With four returning champs, Penn State is picked to win a second straight and tenth title in the past 12 years next March in Tulsa, while No. 2 Iowa and No. 3 Arizona State are expected to challenge the Nittany Lions.

Page 24 – NCAA DIVISION I WEIGHT-BY-WEIGHT PREVIEWS  – Ten former NCAA champions return from eight of ten weight classes in 2022-23, including three at 165 pounds, where Missouri’s Keegan O’Toole, Stanford’s Shane Griffith and Iowa State’s David Carr hope to reign again.

Page 36 – WIN/CULTURE HOUSE HODGE TROPHY PREVIEW – Two-time Hodge winner Spencer Lee could be challenged by three Penn State stars — Roman Bravo-Young, Carter Starocci and Aaron Brooks, as well as Keegan O’Toole and Yianni Diakomihalis for the 2023 Hodge.

Page 38 – DOUBLE DUTY – Junior World champ Ben Kueter of Iowa City explains how he is hoping to be able to balance the demands of both wrestling and football at the highest collegiate level, as he does both sports at Iowa in 2023.
