Tomasello takes over top spot at 133 in WIN’s Jan 16 rankings

By
Updated: January 16, 2017

NEWTON, Iowa — Coming off a 24-11 victory over Iowa on Sunday, Oklahoma State remained No. 1 in WIN’s Jan 16 Dual Team rankings and increased its lead in WIN’s Tournament Power Index, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

Making the biggest individual jumps for Oklahoma State, which features 10 ranked wrestlers and eight in the Top 8 of their weight classes, were Kaid Brock (133 pounds) and Anthony Collica (149) who upset a pair of 2016 NCAA finalists and higher-ranked Hawkeyes, Cory Clark and Brandon Sorensen, respectively, in overtime last weekend in Stillwater.

Brock’s victory also moved Ohio State’s Nathan Tomasello to No. 1 in the 133-pound weight class, which marked the first time there was a change among the nation’s top-ranked wrestlers in this year’s WIN rankings.

Overall, the Cowboys (6-0) earned 104.5 points in this week’s TPI and remained ahead of defending national champion Penn State (7-0) in the dual rankings and TPI with 95.5 points.

WIN’s TPI point totals are based on how individuals of each team are projected to finish in the 2017 NCAA Championships, March 16-18, in St. Louis, with Top-8 finishers (All-Americans) given the following points: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

The Nittany Lions, with nine ranked wrestlers and six in the Top 8, will travel to Iowa City this Friday to take on No. 3 Iowa, which has eight ranked wrestlers and six in the Top 8 and 84 points.

Just behind the Hawkeyes is No. 4 Ohio State with eight ranked wrestlers, five in the Top 8 with 80 points. The Buckeyes’ only dual this week is against Maryland on Sunday, Jan. 22.
