Among the highlights of the three teams:

  • Men’s freestyle (Oct. 20-23) features a “Dream Team” that includes seven of 10 wrestlers who have already placed in past Worlds and were part of the 2017 squad that won the team championship. That includes World champions Logan Stieber, Jordan Burroughs and Kyle Snyder, silver medalists Thomas Gilman and James Green and bronze medalists J’den Cox and Nick Gwiazdowski. And there are three “rookie” wrestlers — Nahshon Garrett, Kyle Dake and David Taylor — who could make an immediate impact in their first World-level championship.
  • Women’s freestyle (Oct. 23-26) features a three-time World champion and 2016 Olympian in Adeline Gray, who missed last season because of injury. Other returning World medal winners are two-time silver medalist Alli Ragan and perhaps World/Olympic champion Helen Maroulis, who is waiting for an opportunity to qualify for this team after dealing with past injuries.
  • No member of the Greco-Roman team (Oct. 25-28) have medaled in past Worlds but the future is now for this American team, whose average age is just under 25 years. Among these top youg stars are 2017 Junior World champion Kamal Bey, two former Michigan prep teammates Dalton Roberts and Adam Coon abd current Cornell All-American Jon Jay Chavez. There are several other wrestlers who have competed at this level in the past, including 35-year-old Sam Hazewinkel, who qualified for the 2012 Olympics in freestyle.

Columnists like Dan Gable and Wayne Baughman also provide insights on the 2018 USA World Teams.
