133-pound Preview

Northern Iowa's Joe Colon defeated Iowa's Tony Ramos for the Midlands championship on Dec. 30.

Northern Iowa’s Joe Colon defeated Iowa’s Tony Ramos for the Midlands championship on Dec. 30.

Northern Iowa’s Joe Colon made a statement at the Midlands where he defeated three former All-Americans: Wisconsin’s Tyler Graff, Edinboro’s A.J. Schopp and Iowa’s Tony Ramos.

Just competing for the Panthers this winter was a bit of a surprise considering his coach Doug Schwab was forced to drop Colon — a national qualifier and No. 5 seed in 2012 — from last year’s team because of academic and personal problems. But Colon responded to the challenge by eventually winning 30 of 31 matches this winter (with the only loss coming against Ohio State’s Johnni DiJulius in the Las Vegas Invitational).

But Ramos — a runner-up to Ohio State’s Logan Stieber in last year’s NCAA final — is ready for another shot at Colon in Oklahoma City, especially after he defeated Graff for the Big Ten championship. Since losing to Colon, the Hawkeye has won 13 straight matches to raise his season’s record to 27-2. And he has 12 pins this year.

But don’t count out Graff and Schopp, who also earned All-American honors last season. Graff, who lost in overtime to Ramos, settled for third place after defeating Schopp, 6-3, in the consolation final.

The Fighting Scot has compiled an impressive 31-1 record, which includes a 3-2 victory over Ramos on Dec. 5 and most recently an Eastern Wrestling League championship. Schopp also has pinned 13 foes this winter.

Oklahoma State’s Jon Morrison, who finished fifth nationally in 2013, enters the NCAAs with a Big 12 championship, 25-1 record and is seeded No. 4.

Perhaps the hungriest to taste All-American honors again is Purdue’s Cashe Quiroga, who finished sixth back in 2010. He qualified again in 2012 but failed to place, then sat out last season because of injuries.
