Latest WIN gets wrestlers and fans ready for the postseason

It’s that time of year again when high school wrestling is starting its state championships and college wrestling is beginning its postseason.

But before that, Oklahoma State and the Texas Rangers welcomed fans to Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, where Jordan Burroughs and fellow Americans competed in freestyle and Greco, and where the OSU Cowboys hosted the Iowa Hawkeyes around second base in the major league stadium.

While the Bout at the Ballpark lacked some of the match-ups many were expecting, it did remind the wrestling community how the sport needs to be showcased in many unique ways…..at what may be the greatest era in American amateur wrestling.

Page 8 – BOUT AT THE BALLPARK: REALITY OVER HYPE – Oklahoma State University and USA Wrestling had big hopes to make the college folkstyle/international style event one of the greatest ever in Texas. But, politics and health issues took away some of the hype.

Page 14 – ILLINOIS NOTEBOOK – The Land of Lincoln is also becoming a Cradle for Coaches as former IKWF wrestlers Sean Bormet and Ryan Birt are making big things happen at Michigan and Milliken.

Page 15 – WASHINGTON NOTEBOOK – The quartet of Q’Veli Quintanilla, Isiah Anderson, Shelby Moore and Alivia White are expected to be some of the biggest newsmakers at the upcoming boys and girls state tournaments.

Page 20 – KEN CHERTOW CAMPS – The former Penn State wrestler is simply showing today’s young wrestlers, including two-time Hodge winner Zain Retherford, what he learned from some great wrestling coaches who taught him as a competitor.

Page 30 – COLORADO’S CARDENAS GOING FOR FOUR – Daniel Cardenas, the nation’s top prep wrestler at 152 pounds, decided to stay in his home state of Colorado rather than attend Blair Academy. He said RMN Events has brought strong competition to his state.

Page 32 – GIVING A HELPING HAND – The number of states that are sanctioning girls high school wrestling is growing very fast. Solon High School in Iowa is showing how good classroom teachers, especially women, can also coach wrestling.

Page 39 – MOLDING CLAY – Clay Carlson of South Dakota State started the season with a bang and hopes to use all of his experiences to land a spot on the All-American podium at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Detroit.

Page 42 – CONFERENCE/NCAA-QUALIFYING PREVIEWS – The seven tournaments that will be held around the country the first weekend of March will help determine the 330 wrestlers who will qualify for the 2022 NCAA Nationals in Detroit.

Page 50 – FACING THE FIRE – Emma Bruntil, one of the nation’s up-and-coming women wrestlers and a writer for WIN  Magazine, shares her story about how the Washington native overcame serious neck injuries to win the prestigious Ivan Yarygin tournament last month in Russia.
