NEWTON, Iowa — Many good things have happened to former Wisconsin All-American Evan Wick since the senior returned to his home state and transferred to Cal Poly. The 165-pounder, from San Marino, Calif., is coming off a championship at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, where he defeated 2021 NCAA champ Shane Griffith of Stanford in the final.

For his efforts, the undefeated Wick (9-0) has taken over the top spot in WIN Magazine’s Dec. 6 rankings and Tournament Power Index, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

Meanwhile, Iowa (3-0) and Penn State (5-0) remained undefeated and are No. 1 and 2 in both WIN’s dual rankings and Tournament Power Index. The Nittany Lions trail the Hawkeyes by a half-point 104.5-104 in this week’s TPI. Iowa has nine ranked wrestlers, seven in the Top 8, including three-time defending champ Spencer Lee at 125 pounds. Penn State features seven ranked wrestlers and the four in the Top-8 are their quartet of 2021 champs, all currently rated No. 1: Roman Bravo-Young (133), Nick Lee (141), Carter Starocci (174) and Aaron Brooks (184).

WIN’s TPI predicts approximately how many NCAA points a team could score in Detroit in March at the Division I Championships based on where their individuals are ranked at this point in the season. Excluding bonus points, the TPI is based on numbers associated with individual placements/rankings based on our current rankings below: 20 for 1st, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by 1.5 points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and 1 point for those ranked 17-20.

Meanwhile, the next three schools in the TPI  — Arizona State (with 64 points), Oklahoma State (63) and Michigan (61) — are separated by only three points. In the dual rankings, Iowa and Penn State are followed by Oklahoma State, NC State and Michigan.
