NEWTON, IOWA — Iowa’s Alex Marinelli and Virginia Tech’s Hunter Bolen have taken over the top spots at 165 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively, in WIN Magazine’s Feb. 15 NCAA Division I rankings, based on action that happened last week.

With Marinelli moving up, the Hawkeyes — who were put on a COVID pause and were unable to compete last weekend — now have four wrestlers ranked No. 1 among the ten weight classes; joining Spencer Lee (125), Jaydin Eierman (149) and Michael Kemerer (174). With these changes, Iowa has increased its lead in WIN’s Tournament Power Index with 144 points. Overall, Iowa, which also ranks No. 1 in WIN’s Dual Team rankings with a 5-0 record, feature 10 ranked wrestlers, including nine in the Top 8 of their weight class.

Bolen moves into the top spot at 184 after Michigan’s top-ranked Myles Amine weighed in and competed at 197 pounds this past weekend in the team’s dual against Penn State. Amine, having already qualified for the Olympic Games for San Marino at 189 pounds, likely is preparing his body for Olympic preparation training while also wrestling the collegiate season.

The TPI suggests how many NCAA points that a school could produce in the 2021 national tournament that will take place March 18-20 in St. Louis, Mo. The following is a point breakdown of the TPI, based on a wrestler’s ranking: 20 for 1st, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by 1.5 points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and 1 point for those ranked 17-20.

The other five top-ranked wrestlers include Oklahoma State’s Daton Fix (133), North Carolina’s Austin O’Connor (149), Northwestern’s Ryan Deakin (157), Nebraska’s Eric Schultz (197) and Minnesota’s Gable Steveson (Hwt).

Nebraska, which features seven ranked wrestlers and four in the Top 8, has moved into No. 2 in the TPI with 65.5 points; just edging Penn State that has nine ranked wrestlers, four in the Top 8, for 65 points.

The Nittany Lions, coming off an 18-13 road victory over Michigan is in second place in WIN’s dual-team rankings.

Meanwhile, less than six points separate the next five schools in WIN’s TPI as Arizona State, fresh off a pair of wins over Iowa State and Northern Iowa, is ranked No. 4 with 57 points. The Sun Devils are followed by No. 5 NC State (54), No. 6 Oklahoma State (53.5), Virginia Tech (53) and Michigan (51.5).

Seven wrestlers are new to this week’s WIN rankings: Virginia’s Michael Battista (184) and Quinn Miller (Hwt); Iowa State’s Zach Redding (133), Army’s P.J. Ogunsanya (149), Northern Illinois’ Mason Kaufmann (174), North Carolina’s Clay Lautt (174) and Campbell’s Austin Murphy (174).
