Missouri & Illinois make big jumps in WIN’s Jan. 18 rankings

NEWTON, Iowa — The wrestling programs at Missouri and Illinois made the most notable jumps in the Jan. 18 national rankings by WIN Magazine.

The Tigers, with nine ranked wrestlers, moved up two spots to No. 5 in WIN’s dual ranks by collecting a pair of road wins over Iowa State and Northern Iowa to remain unbeaten (7-0) in this season that will consist of only dual meets. Meanwhile the Illini — unranked a week ago — defeated both Ohio State and Wisconsin to improve to 3-0 and now feature six wrestlers in WIN’s individual rankings. Illini heavyweight Luke Luffman also joined the national rankings (No. 11) after he collected victories over the Buckeyes’ Tate Orndorff and the Badgers’ Trent Hillger.

The University of Iowa, coming off a 31-6 home victory over Nebraska in its season-opener last Friday, remained the No. 1 team in both WIN’s dual rankings and Tournament Power Index, which is compiled by tallying the potential NCAA points associated with individual rankings. The Hawkeyes, with all 10 wrestlers rated in the Top 8 of their weight class, have 133 TPI points. The only change to the Iowa lineup saw sophomore Nelson Brands, coming off a victory over Nebraska’s Taylor Venz, replace teammate Abe Assad and move to No. 7 in the individual rankings.

The remaining top 4 teams — Penn State, Michigan and Oklahoma State — remain the same in WIN’s team rankings and each team features nine ranked wrestlers.

Penn State, which saw its season-opener last Friday postponed because of COVID issues, remains No. 2 in the Dual rankings and No. 4 in WIN’s TPI with 67.5 points. Five of the Nittany Lions are ranked in the Top 8, including redshirt freshmen Greg Kerklvliet (No. 5 at heavyweight) and Carter Starocci (No. 6 at 174).

Michigan and Oklahoma State are ranked No. 3 and 4, respectively, in both team rankings.  The Wolverines, coming off a win over Indiana, improved to 3-0 on the season and feature five in the Top 8, including a pair of All-Americans — Stevan Micic (133) and Myles Amine (184) — who have yet to compete this season.

The Cowboys, now 4-0 after victories over SIU-Edwardsville and Little Rock, feature six Top-8 wrestlers, including top-ranked Daton Fix, who has yet to wrestle for the Cowboys this winter.

The following are WIN’s team and individual rankings. The TPI points are awarded for individual rankings; 20 for 1st place, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by 1.5 points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and 1 point for those ranked 17-20.
