NEWTON, Iowa — Now that the 2021 NCAA Division I Wrestling season is finally underway … and with just dual meet competition … a whopping 17 freshmen are rated in WIN Magazine’s first national rankings of this shortened season.

Four talented freshen enter WIN’s rankings for the first time in their collegiate careers in the top 10. All four wrestle in the Big Ten Conference. Penn State has two of them, Carter Starocci is the highest ranked newcomer at No. 6 at 174 pounds while teammate Greg Kerkvliet is No. 8 at heavyweight. Michigan’s Dylan Ragusin is slated at No. 9 at 125 while Ohio State freshman Carson Kharchla is in the No. 10 spot at 165 for Ohio State.

Iowa, looking to claim the program’s 25th all-time team championship this March at the NCAA Division I Championships in St. Louis, has 132 points in WIN’s Tournament Power Index, which is based on potential NCAA points that go with a wrestler’s individual ranking. Iowa features 10 ranked wrestlers, all in the Top 8 of their weight class, including a trio of  No. 1-ranked wrestlers in Spencer Lee (125), Jaydin Eierman (141) and Michael Kemmerer (174).  Iowa, which opens its season this Friday against Nebraska, also tops WIN’s Dual-Meet rankings.

Michigan is ranked second in WIN’s TPI with 81 as the Wolverines feature nine ranked wrestlers and five rated in the Top 8. This goup includes top-ranked Myles Amine at 184 pounds. Michigan, which opened its season with wins over Rutgers and Maryland, is rated No. 3 in WIN’s dual rankings.

Oklahoma State, Penn State and Nebraska make up the rest of the Top 5 schools in both team rankings.

The Cowboys, which feature nine ranked wrestlers and a top-ranked wrestler in Daton Fix at 133 pounds, have 69.5 TPI points, just ahead of Penn State with 61.5 points. Nebraska is fifth in the TPI with 53 points, based on seven ranked wrestlers and four in the Top 8. The Nittany Lions, who open their season this Saturday in a dual meet at Rutgers, are rated No. 2 in WIN’s dual rankings, followed by Michigan, Nebraska (coming off a home win against Minnesota) and Oklahoma State, which defeated Chattanooga and Oregon State last weekend on their home mat.

Among Penn State’s eight ranked wrestlers are two former All-Americans in junior Roman Bravo-Young (133) and senior Nick Lee (141), while Cael Sanderson’s squad features a No. 3-ranked wrestler in sophomore Aaron Brooks (184) and four freshmen: Joe Lee (165), Starocci (174), Michael Beard (197) and Kerkvliet (Hwt).

Michigan and Oklahoma State also feature several freshmen, including the Wolverines’ Ragusin (125) and Cameron Amine (165), while Oklahoma State has introduced freshmen Trevor Mastrogiovanni  (125), Dustin Plott (174) and A.J. Ferrari (197) to varsity competition this winter.

The following are WIN’s team and individual rankings. The TPI points are broken down by individual ranks; 20 for 1st place, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by 1.5 point for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and 1 point for those ranked 17-20.
