Quarterfinal Highlights

  • #1 Aaron Brooks (Penn State) dec. #8 Taylor Venz (Nebraska), 9-4 – The Nittany fell behind 3-2 as the early in the second period when the Husker scored on a reversal, before Brooks came back with two of his three takedowns and added a riding time point.
  • #4 Parker Keckeisen (Northern Iowa) dec. #5 Hunter Bolen (Virginia Tech), 4-2 sv2 — The Panther freshman ended the bout when he exploded for a power double with 15 seconds left in the second sudden victory period. Before that, each man surrendered a pair of escapes, including one each in the tiebreaker phase of the first sudden victory period.
  • #6 John Poznanski (Rutgers) dec. #3 Lou DePrez (Binghamton) 6-3 — The Scarlet Knight true freshman gave up two takedowns to help DePrez take a 4-3 lead in the third period before Poznanski rallied with a takedown and two-point nearfall in the final 11 seconds.
  • #2 Trent Hidlay (NC State) dec. #7 Brit Wilson (Northern Illinois 3-1 — The Wolfpack sophomore scored the bout’s only takedown late in the second period, the fought off a good shot by Wilson in the third.

Second Round Notes

  • One of Friday’s quarterfinals will be a rematch of the 2021 Big Ten final. Top-ranked Aaron Brooks of Penn State shut out Minnesota’s Owen Webster, 5-0, needing just one first-period takedown. Nebraska’s Taylor Venz, who lost to Brooks at the Big Tens, beat Missouri’s Jeremiah Kent, 10-4, by exploding for eight points in the final 38 seconds of the third period. That included a four-point nearfall with 29 seconds left.
  • Binghamton has a quarterfinalist in Lou DePrez, who beat Campbell’s Caleb Hopkins, 4-1 as a first period takedown allowed the Bearcat to also earn a riding time point.
  • A pair of first-period takedowns by Rutgers freshman John Poznanski helped the Scarlett Knight beat Oklahoma State All-American Dakota Geer, 7-3.
