Final WIN Rankings feature three new No. 1 wrestlers

Updated: March 12, 2019

NEWTON, Iowa — The 2019 NCAA Division I National Championships are about a week a way and three wrestlers have taken over the top spots in their individual weights, according to WIN Magazine’s final 2018-19 Tournament Power Index and Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

Following the eight national-qualifying tournaments, which were held last week, Oklahoma State’s Daton Fix at 133 pounds and heavyweight Derek White … and Iowa’s Alex Marinelli at 165 pounds are now ranked No. 1 at their weight classes.

This came after Michigan’s Stevan Micic (133 pounds) medically forfeited three straight bouts after making his conference semifinal and finished sixth in the Big Tens, where two other previously top-ranked wrestlers lost conference championship tilts: Penn State’s 165-pound Vincenzo Joseph (vs. Marinelli) and Minnesota’s Gable Steveson (vs. Penn State’s Anthony Cassar).

The other seven top-ranked wrestlers remain the same, including three from Penn State — Jason Nolf (157), Mark Hall (174) and Bo Nickal (197) — with the others being Northwestern’s Sebastian Rivera (125), Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis (141), Rutgers’ Anthony Ashnault (149) and Ohio State’s Myles Martin (184).

In WIN’s Tournament Power Index, Big Ten champion Penn State remains No. 1 with 123 points and is predicted to claim a fourth-straight team championship, March 21-23 in Pittsburgh, and has seven of its nine ranked wrestlers currently in the top 8 of their weight class.

Oklahoma State, fresh off a seventh-straight Big 12 team championship, is ranked No. 2 in the Tournament Power Index with 90.5 points as six of nine ranked Cowboys are picked to earn All-American honors.

The remaining top-five teams are Ohio State (80), Iowa (69.5) and Michigan (57).
