No. 1 vs. No. 2 Matchups featured in Feb. 4 WIN Rankings

Updated: February 4, 2019

NEWTON, Iowa — The top two spots at 184 and 197 pounds will be up for grabs this Friday when top-ranked Penn State — according to WIN’s Feb. 4 Tournament Power Index and Rankings presented by Cliff Keen Athletic — travels to No. 2 Ohio State.

The Buckeyes’ No. 1 Myles Martin, the 2016 NCAA champ and three-time All-American, is expected to meet Penn State’s No. 2 Shakur Rasheed at 184 pounds … and Penn State’s No. 1 Bo Nickal, the two-time NCAA champ and three-time All-American, will face the Buckeyes’ No. 2 Kollin Moore at 197, when the nation’s top two schools meet in Columbus, Ohio, at 8:40 EST.

Penn State (10-0) remains No. 1 in the weekly TPI — with nine ranked wrestlers and 123 points — while the Buckeyes (9-1), which has finished second to Penn State the past two NCAAs, are ranked second with seven rated wrestlers and 84.5 TPI points.

The Nittany Lions feature seven wrestlers ranked in the Top 8 of their weight class, including Jason Nolf (157), Vincenzo Joseph (165) and Mark Hall (174), who are top-ranked. The Buckeyes feature six in the Top 8, including All-American Joey McKenna, ranked No. 2 at 141, and Micah Jordan, No. 3 at 149.

There is a change at the top spot at 149 pounds in this week’s WIN rankings after Rutgers’ Anthony Ashnault, ranked No. 2 last week, scored a 10-2 major decision over Princeton’s No. 1 Matt Kolodzik last Sunday. The match-up came also as a battle of in-state supremacy from the two New Jersey-based programs.

WIN’s Tournament Power Index awards team points for individuals ranked in the respective weight classes based on how many potential All-Americans each school could produce at the 2019 NCAA Championships, March 21-23, in Pittsburgh, Pa.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
