WIN’s Dec. 10 Rankings feature upcoming bout between top two wrestlers at 174 pounds

Photo: Arizona State’s Zahid Valencia (top), who defeated Penn State’s Mark Hall for the 2018 NCAA championship at 174 pounds last March, remained top-ranked ahead of the No. 2 Nittany Lion as they prepare to wrestle this Friday in State College, Pa. Hall is also a former national champion after winning the title in 2017, when he defeated the Sun Devil in the semifinals.

NEWTON, Iowa —Arizona State will compete at Penn State this Friday night, which sets up a meeting between the two top-ranked wrestlers and former national champs — ASU’s No. 1 Zahid Valencia and PSU’s No. 2 Mark Hall — at 174 pounds, according to WIN’s Dec. 10 TPI and Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

Meanwhile, two other 2018 All-Americans — Missouri’s Grant Leeth (149) and Kent State’s Kyle Conel (197) — have dropped out of the national rankings after suffering season-ending injuries.

Also, nine new wrestlers join the rankings this week: Appalachian State’s Randall Diabe (197 pounds), Maryland’s Alfred Bannister (149), Michigan’s Jelani Embree(197), Minnesota’s Tommy Thorn (149), Missouri’s Colby Smith (125) and Dylan Wisman (184), Penn’s Anthony Artalona (149), Penn State’s Roman Bravo-Young(133) and Wisconsin’s Connor Brown (125).

In WIN’s team rankings, the undefeated Nittany Lions (3-0) remain top-ranked in both the Tournament Power Index (TPI) with 114.5 points and Dual Team rankings, which includes results through Sunday, Dec. 9. Among Penn State’s eight ranked wrestlers, seven are rated in the Top 8 of their weight class, including three who are top-ranked: Jason Nolf (157), Vincenzo Joseph (165) and Bo Nickal (197).

Ohio State, Iowa and Oklahoma State occupy spots No. 2 through 4 in the team rankings. The Buckeyes, with eight ranked wrestlers, earned 79 points, followed by Iowa (9) with 73.5 and Oklahoma State (10) with 63.5 points.

WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI) awards team points for individuals ranked in the respective weight classes based on how many potential All-Americans each school could produce at the 2019 NCAA Championships, March 21-23, in Pittsburgh, Pa.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
