Ohio State caps off CKLV Invite title with three champs, seven placers

LAS VEGAS — Ohio State capped off a successful Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational as three Buckeyes — Joey McKenna (141), Myles Martin (184) and Kollin Moore (197) — all won championships Saturday night at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Overall, the Buckeyes placed seven wrestlers and won the team championship with 148 points, followed by Missouri (115.5), Nebraska (105.5), Northern Iowa (84.5) and Michigan (82.5).

Rutgers, meanwhile, produced two individual champions: Nick Suriano (133) and Anthony Ashnault (149)

CKLV Invite finals and highlights

125 – #1 Sebastian Rivera (Northwestern) dec. #2 Ronnie Bresser (Oregon State), 6-4  sv — The Wildcat fell behind 2-0 midway through the first period on a takedown by the Beaver before Rivera rallied and scored the winning takedown with 31 seconds left in sudden victory. Rivera also took a 4-3 lead on a takedown with 43 seconds left in regulation before Bresser tied the match with an escape with 23 ticks left.

133 – #1 Nick Suriano (Rutgers) major dec. #6 Micky Phillippi (Pitt), 11-3 — The Scarlet Knight scored two of his four takedowns in the first period and added a penalty point and riding point at the end.

141 – #1 Joey McKenna (Ohio State) dec. #2 Jaydin Eierman (Missouri), 6-2 — The Buckeye scored both of his takedowns in the first period then rode out the Tiger the entire second period, which later earned McKenna a riding time point.

149 – #1 Anthony Ashnault (Rutgers) dec. #2 Micah Jordan (Ohio State), 14-10  — Ashnault used a first period takedown and a pair of four-point tilts of a tight waist to take a 10-0 lead before the Buckeye battled back to score four takedown in the third period.

157 – #2 Ryan Deakin (Northwestern) dec. #8 Griffin Parriott (Purdue), 8-2 — Deakin scored takedowns in each the first and second periods to lead 6-2 before he rode out the Boilermaker the entire third frame.

165 – #4 Isaiah White (Nebraska) dec. #7 Mehki Lewis (Virginia Tech), 2-0  — The Husker first took a 1-0 lead in the second off an escape, then rode out the Hokie the entire third period.

174 – #1 Myles Amine (Michigan) dec. #2 Daniel Lewis (Missouri), 10-7 — Amine took a 4-3 lead after an exciting first period as the Wolverine scored a takedown then countered a reversal by Lewis, who eventually tied the match 7-7 on a takedown with 1:26 left. Amine then earned a stalling point with 21 seconds left and a reversal with 10 ticks left to clinch the championship.

184 – #1 Myles Martin (Ohio State) dec. #2 Taylor Venz (Nebraska), 11-5 — Martin was leading just 4-2 after two periods before he exploded with a reversal and two takedowns in the third period. The Buckeye also earned a riding time point.

197 – #1 Kollin Moore (Ohio State) dec. #10 Eric Schultz (Nebraska), 8-3 — After a scoreless first period, Moore took a 4-2 lead after two with a pair of takedowns — the second coming with one second left in the second period — then added another takedown to extend his lead to 7-2.

Hwt – #1 Gable Steveson (Minnesota) vs. #6 Tate Orndorff (Utah Valley), 12-4 — The true freshman completed a dominating tournament — which saw the Gopher score bonus points in four of his five victories as he jumped out to a 6-1 lead after one period when he tallied two takedowns and a two-point nearfall. Steveson added a third and final takedown with one second in the bout.
