Updated: December 19, 2017

NEWTON, Iowa — Ohio State has moved past defending NCAA champion Penn State in WIN’s Dec. 19, 2017 Tournament Power Index, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic. The Buckeyes have wrestlers ranked at all 10 weights, including nine listed among the Top 8 in their weight class.

Among Ohio State’s nine projected All-Americans are three wrestlers who are ranked No. 1 at their weight class: Nathan Tomasello (125 pounds), Kollin Moore (197) and Kyle Snyder (Hwt). Other Ohio State wrestlers ranked in the Top 8 are Luke Pletcher (7th at 133), Joey McKenna (6th at 141), Ke-Shawn Hayes (5th at 149), Micah Jordan (6th at 157), Bo Jordan (3rd at 174) and Myles Martin (2nd at 184).

Penn State, meanwhile, is still ranked No. 1 in WIN’s dual rankings and features seven wrestlers in this week’s rankings and all seven are rated among the Top 8 of their weight, including top-ranked and defending champions Zain Retherford (149), Jason Nolf (157), Vincenzo Joseph (165) and Bo Nickal (184).

WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI) awards teams points for individuals ranked in the respective weight classes based on how many potential All-Americans each school could produce at the 2018 NCAA Championships this March. WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

The other Top-10 ranked teams, according to WIN’s TPI formula, are Michigan, Oklahoma State, NC State, Lehigh, Missouri, Arizona State, Iowa and Virginia Tech. Among those teams, the Wolfpack made the biggest jump after winning last Sunday’s Reno Tournament of Champions with three individual champions.

In WIN’s dual-team rankings, Penn State is followed by Ohio State and Oklahoma State. The Nittany Lions and Cowboys will be participating in the Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

WIN’s next rankings will be announced on Jan. 3, 2018.
