Dec. 4, 2017

NEWTON, Iowa — There are 20 wrestlers who are new to WIN’s Dec. 4 Individual Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic. That includes Nebraska’s redshirt freshman Taylor Venz, who is rated No. 6 at 184 pounds after finishing third at the Las Vegas Invitational while three Wisconsin Badgers joined the rankings: sophomore Eli Stickley (16th at 141), redshirt freshman Zander Wick (19th at 149) and sophomore Hunter Ritter (18th at 197).

Meanwhile, Cornell freshman Yianni Diakomihalis made one of the bigger jumps — moving from ninth to third at 141 pounds — after winning the CKLV championship last weekend.

In WIN’s latest team rankings Penn State, which rallied from a 15-0 deficit to beat Lehigh, 23-19, on Sunday, Dec. 3, retained its No. 1 ranking in both WIN’s Dual Rankings and Tournament Power Index.

The Nittany Lions, winners of six of the last seven NCAA championships, feature seven ranked wrestlers in this week’s rankings, all of whom are ranked in the Top 8 of their weight class — including top-ranked: Zain Retherford (149), Jason Nolf (157), Vincenzo Joseph (165) and Bo Nickal (184) — to tally 119 TPI points.

WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI) awards teams points for individuals ranked in the respective weight classes based on how many potential All-Americans each school could produce at the 2018 NCAA Championships this March. WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

Ohio State, coming off a second straight Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational championship without some of its ranked wrestlers, remained No. 2 with 113 TPI points. The Buckeyes have a rated wrestler at all 10 weight classes, including three top-ranked wrestlers: Nathan Tomasello (125), Kollin Moore (197) and Kyle Snyder (Hwt).

Oklahoma State and Michigan remained No. 3 and 4 as both schools feature eight ranked wrestlers, six in the Top 8 of their weight classes.

The other top-ranked wrestlers are South Dakota State’s Seth Gross (133), Oklahoma State Dean Heil (141) and Arizona State’s Zahid Valencia, who was named O.W. of last weekend’s CKLV.
