Winning Cadet Women’s freestyle means beating state sisters

FARGO, N.D. — Representing one’s state is important to all the wrestlers competing at the weeklong United States Marines Corps Cadet and Junior Nationals. But, that takes on every more importance when wrestlers have to face someone from their own state in the finals.

That was the case for Louisa Schwab and Macey Kilty of Illinois and Wisconsin, respectively, who defeated state team members to win individual championships in the Cadet Freestyle Nationals Tuesday afternoon in the Fargodome.

Schwab, a sophomore from Joliet High School and Plainfield, Ill., defeated Randi Robison, a junior from East Peoria, Ill., 5-1, to claim the 122-pound championship while Kilty, a junior from River Falls High School and Stratford, Wisc., won by 10-0 technical fall over Ashton Cadman, a junior from Waterford, Wisc.

“I don’t see Randy as much during the school year,” said Schwab. “I feel like when we come together for big events like this you go from being opponents to come together as a family.”

“Ashton and I have been training partners for a long time and I’m really thankful for her because she really pushes me,” said Kilty, who recently won a gold medal at the Pan American Cadet Championships.

For her efforts, Kilty was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Cadet Women’s Freestyle.

This national event, the second of six different tournaments that are being held for a week on the campus of North Dakota State University, also featured three champions who will also represent the United States at the United World Wrestling World Championships, Sept. 4-10, in Athens, Greece.

And while World Team members Emily Shilson of Maple Grove, Minn., and Olivia Shore of St. Paris, Ohio, easily won by technical falls at 94 and 100 pounds, respectively, while Kelani Corbett rallied from a 4-0 deficit to beat McKenzie Cook, 8-5, for the 152-pound championship

“I did the same thing in my semifinals match, but I always push myself to come back strong,” said Corbett, a junior from Leilehua High School in Honolulu, Hawaii.

“I’m trying to get my name well known but that also means people are out there trying to bring you down.”

Meanwhile, Stefana Jelacic from Fountain Hills, Ariz., defeated Viktorya Torres of Granger, Wash., 6-4, to claim the 112-pound championship and the first Cadet Women’s freestyle from the state of Arizona.

California had two champions and won the team championship with 102 points, followed by Texas and Illinois — which each had one champ — with 71 and 52 points, respectively.

Other teams with two champs included Wisconsin, Oregon and Ohio.
