Penn State ranked No. 1 in both WIN’s Feb. 6 Dual and Tournament rankings

By
Updated: February 8, 2017

NEWTON, Iowa — Penn State won the road dual at Ohio State last weekend to remain undefeated and is now rated No. 1 in both WIN’s dual-meet rankings and Tournament Power Index (TPI) in the Feb. 6 rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

The Nittany Lions raised their dual record to 11-0 with the 32-12 victory over Ohio State last Friday in Columbus, Ohio, and have two more regular season home dual meets remaining this weekend: Friday vs. Illinois and Sunday vs. Maryland.

Dropping from the top spot to No. 2 in WIN’s dual rankings was Oklahoma State, which also remained undefeated (12-0) with wins at Edinboro and Kent State and will wrap up the regular season at home this weekend with duals against Wyoming and Oklahoma this Friday and Sunday.

By winning both their final duals this weekend, these top two teams would meet in the upcoming NWCA National Duals Series, Feb. 19, when Oklahoma State would play host to Penn State. Last year, the Lions beat the Cowboys at home in the championship dual of this series of duals that will feature the top eight Big Ten schools and top teams from the non-Big Ten conferences.

Penn State and Oklahoma State also remain No. 1 and 2 in WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI). The Lions have nine ranked wrestlers, seven in the Top 8 at their weights, and earned 103.5 TPI points compared to the Cowboys who feature 10 ranked wrestlers for 86.5 TPI points.

Just behind are Ohio State and Iowa with 82.5 and 79.5 TPI points, respectively. The Hawkeyes are rated above the Buckeyes in the dual rankings.

WIN’s TPI point totals are based on how individuals of each team are projected to finish in the 2017 NCAA Championships, March 16-18, in St. Louis, with Top-8 finishers (All-Americans) given the following points: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
