Oklahoma State and Penn State head to Reno ranked 1st and 2nd

Updated: December 12, 2016

NEWTON, Iowa — As Oklahoma State and Penn State prepare to meet for the first time this Sunday at the Reno Tournament of Champions, the Cowboys and Nittany Lions remain the top two schools in WIN’s Dec. 12, 2016 Tournament Power Index, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

The Cowboys have tallied 94.5 TPI points, based on 10 ranked wrestlers, including seven rated among the top eight in their weight class. The Lions are second in WIN’s TPI with 87.5 points, based on nine ranked wrestlers, six in the top eight.

The 22nd annual event, which begins Friday and Saturday with a high school tournament, will see 26 college teams compete on Sunday, Dec. 18, in Reno, Nev.

If all of Oklahoma State’s and Penn State’s ranked wrestlers compete in the Reno TOC, here are wrestlers from each of the top two teams who would be in the same bracket:

Weight 1. Oklahoma State 2. Penn State
125 12. Nick Piccininni 5. Nick Suriano
133 6. Kaid Brock 20. Jered Cortez
141 1. Dean Heil
149 3. Anthony Collica 1. Zain Retherford
157 3. Joe Smith 1. Jason Nolf
165 9. Chandler Rogers 7. Vincezo Joseph
174 4. Kyle Crutchmer 11. Geno Morelli
184 5. Nolan Boyd 3. Bo Nickal
197 5. Preston Weigel 12. Matt McCutcheon
Hwt 9. Austin Schafer 4. Nick Nevills

Ranked just behind Penn State is No. 3 Iowa, which is coming off an instate dual victory over Iowa State and features seven ranked wrestlers, all in the Top 8, for 87 TPI points.

The TPI is based on the schools’ wrestlers who are rated in WIN’s individual rankings, predicting possible All-American placement (top eight finishers per weight) in the 2017 NCAA Championships, which will be held March 16-18 in St. Louis.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
