NEWTON, Iowa — Preseason favorite Oklahoma State remains No. 1 and a total of 17 freshmen (including redshirt freshmen) are listed among the Top 20 in the ten NCAA Division I weight classes in WIN’s Nov. 14 Tournament Power Index and Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

The TPI is based on the schools’ wrestlers who are rated in WIN’s individual rankings, predicting possible All-American candidates (top eight finishers per weight) in the 2017 NCAA Championships, which will be held March 16-18 in St. Louis.

This week’s rankings, based on results through No. 13, is the first of 16 weekly rankings by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine and WIN will announce its first NCAA Division I Dual Team rankings on Dec. 5.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

The top-ranked Cowboys — featuring eight wrestlers ranked among the Top 8 in their weight class, including defending national champion Dean Heil at 141 pounds — have tallied 90 points in this week’s rankings, just ahead of Iowa, which has earned 86 TPI points and features six wrestlers ranked in the Top 8, including Thomas Gilman and Cory Clark, who are rated No. 1 at 125 and 133.

The rest of the top five teams include No. 3 Ohio State (77 points), No. 4 Virginia Tech (71.5) and No. 5 Penn State (69), which has won five of the last six NCAA championships, including the 2016 title.

All preseason picks in the individual rankings remain No. 1, including defending national champions Zain Retherford (149) of Penn State, Isaiah Martinez (165) of Illinois, Gabe Dean (184) of Cornell, J’den Cox (197) of Missouri and heavyweight Kyle Snyder of Ohio State.

Among the top freshmen include the Valencia brothers — Anthony and Zahid — of Arizona State, who are ranked No. 14 and 7, respectively, at 165 and 174 pounds, while defending national champion Penn State features two ranked freshmen: Nick Suriano (9th at 125) and Vincenzo Joseph (15th at 174).
