WIN’s Final Rankings before the start of the NCAA qualifying tournaments

Updated: February 23, 2016

NEWTON, Iowa — The 2015-16 regular season has officially ended with Penn State claiming the NWCA National Duals championship this past Sunday and the Nittany Lions remain the NCAA Div. I team to beat in the postseason according to WIN’s Feb. 23 national rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

With Jason Nolf (157), Bo Nickal (174) and Morgan McIntosh (197) leading their weight classes, Penn State is projected to finish with six All-Americans and earn 103 Tournament Power Index points in this week’s TPI, which projects how many points a school could earn in this year’s NCAA tournament, March 17-19, in New York City.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down as follows: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

This week’s rankings also show there are five other teams with a potential group of All-Americans who could challenge PSU: No. 2 Iowa, No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Virginia Tech and No. 5 Ohio State, which scored between 71 and 78.5 points in this week’s TPI.

Next up for the Division I schools are one of eight different qualifying tournaments. They include, in chronological order:

  • Pac 12, Feb. 27 in Tempe, Ariz.
  • Eastern Wrestling League, March 5 in Lock Haven, Pa.
  • Southern Conference, March 5 in Asheville, N.C.
  • Big Ten Conference, March 5-6 in Iowa City, Iowa
  • Big 12 Conference, March 5-6 in Kansas City, Mo.
  • Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, March 5-6 in Princeton, N.J.
  • Mid-American Conference, March 5-6 in Ypsilanti, Mich.
  • Atlantic Coast Conference, March 6 in Charlottesville, Va.
