NEWTON, Iowa — As the 2016 college wrestling season heads into the month of February, Penn State remains the favorite to win this year’s NCAA Division I Championships according to WIN’s Feb. 1 rankings presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

The undefeated Nittany Lions (12-0, coming off a 35-7 win over Michigan on Sunday) remain No. 1 in both WIN’s Dual-Team rankings and the magazine’s Tournament Power Index (TPI), which predicts how teams will finish in the 2016 national tournament held March 17-19 in New York City.

Penn State still features six wrestlers in the Top 8 of their weight class — which would earn them All-American status — and two top-ranked wrestlers to earn 102.5 points in this week’s TPI.

Oklahoma State remains No. 2 in this week’s Tournament Power Index with seven Top 8 wrestlers, two top-ranked wrestlers and 88.5 TPI points, followed by Iowa (6, 1, 74.5), Ohio State (4, 2, 72.5) and Virginia Tech (6, 0, 64).

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down as follows: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

Meanwhile, the majority of teams’ ratings remained the same in WIN’s Dual-Team Rankings, including two other undefeated schools: No. 2 Iowa (14-0) and No. 3 NC State, which earned a school-record 20-0 season mark with three dual victories last week. Making its first appearance is Central Michigan (6-4), which defeated MAC rival Northern Iowa last weekend.
