Penn State & Kyle Snyder take over top spots in WIN’s Jan. 4 rankings

NEWTON, Iowa — World freestyle champion Kyle Snyder and the Penn State wrestling team made quite a bit of news over the holiday period and each have taken over top spots in WIN’s Jan. 4 team and individual rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

Ohio State announced that Snyder, who captured a United World Wrestling championship in September at 213 pounds, was taking off his Olympic redshirt to compete at heavyweight for Ohio State, beginning in February. With that news, the Buckeye sophomore has earned WIN’s No. 1 ranking at that weight class.

Meanwhile, Penn State turned in an impressive performance on Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn., where the Nittany Lions crowned five individual championships to earn their sixth straight Southern Scuffle title … and are not ranked No. 1 in WIN’s Tournament Power Index. Making the biggest move in WIN’s individual ranks for Penn State was redshirt freshman Bo Nickal, who is rated No. 1 at 174 pounds after earning O.W. honors at the Scuffle.

WIN’s TPI points are based on where the teams’ individuals are projected — based on WIN’s individual rankings — to finish in this season’s NCAA Championships, March 17-19, in New York City, with Top-8 finishers earning All-American points. At this point in the season, Penn State and Southern Scuffle runner-up Oklahoma State are projected to have six wrestlers finish among the top eight places in their weight classes. Iowa, which won the recent Midlands championship in Evanston, Ill., has five wrestlers ranked among the top eight and is ranked No. 3 in WIN’s latest TPI.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down as follows: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

The Nittany Lions (6-0) remain No. 1 in WIN’s Dual Team Rankings, followed by Iowa (8-0), Virginia Tech (4-1), NC State (11-0), Missouri (5-0) and Oklahoma State (4-2).
