NEWTON, Iowa — North Carolina State, coming off an impressive road victory over Oklahoma State on Dec. 6, has moved up five spots to No. 5 in WIN’s Dual Team rankings to highlight the magazine’s NCAA Division I rankings for Dec. 7.

With six wrestlers appearing among WIN’s individual rankings, including two-time defending national champion Nick Gwiazdowski, ranked No. 1 at heavyweight, the undefeated Wolfpack (9-0) are also currently ranked No. 7 in WIN’s latest Tournament Power Index.

While all ten wrestlers, ranked No. 1 at their weight classes, remain the same in this week’s rankings, there are 14 new wrestlers who appear in this week’s ratings. That includes Purdue’s Chad Welch (ninth at 165), who finished second at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational last weekend as well as Virginia Tech’s Zack Zavatsky (seventh at 184), Missouri’s Dan Lewis (tenth at 165) and CSU’s Bakersfield’s Reuben Franklin (ninth at 197), who all finished third at the CKLV.

Penn State, after crowning seven champions at its Nittany Lion Open last Sunday, remains the top-ranked team in WIN’s Dual ratings, followed by Iowa, Virginia Tech, Nebraska and NC State.

Meanwhile, Iowa remains No. 1 in WIN’s TPI, which predicts where teams will finish in this season’s NCAA Division I Championships in New York City (March 17-19), based on individual ratings at this point in the season. Just behind the Hawkeyes (with 86.5 TPI points) are Oklahoma State (80.5), Penn State (77), Missouri (63) and Virginia Tech (61).

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down as followed: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
