Penn State and Okie State remain No. 1 in WIN’s Nov 23 Dual and TPI rankings

NEWTON, Iowa — After three weeks of the NCAA Division I wrestling season, Penn State and Oklahoma State are among the teams most thankful this week as both the Nittany Lions and Cowboys remained No. 1, respectively, in either WIN’s Dual Team Rankings or Tournament Power Index (TPI), which were updated and released today.

Penn State, led by top-ranked Morgan McIntosh at 197 pounds and coming off road wins at CSU Bakersfield and Stanford, improved its record to 4-0 … and also features five Top 8-ranked wrestlers of their weight, which would earn them All-American points in the 2016 NCAAs. The Lions are now within 2.5 points of Iowa for second place in WIN’s current TPI.

Oklahoma State and Iowa, which both feature six wrestlers in the Top 8, remain the top teams in the TPI as the Cowboys have tallied 86.5 points, compared to Iowa with 75. Penn State is in third place with 73.5 points. Virginia Tech, which also has six wrestlers in the Top 8, is rated fourth with 65 TPI points, followed by the defending national champion Ohio State with 56.5 points.

WIN’s team TPI point totals are based on how many points a wrestler would receive at the 2016 NCAAs — held March 17-19 in New York City — based on their current individual ranking: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5); 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

The team making the biggest jump in WIN’s dual-team rankings was Oklahoma, which moved from 16 to 11 after defeating Michigan, 23-12, on Sunday (Nov. 22) in Norman, Okla. The Wolverines fell from No. 5 to 13 in WIN’s dual rankings.
