Nittany Lions ranked No. 1 in WIN’s first dual rankings

NEWTON, Iowa — Penn State lost its national attendance record last Saturday when Iowa and Oklahoma State drew 42,287 fans to Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. But the 2015-16 Nittany Lions are the nation’s top dual-meet NCAA Division I team, according to WIN’s first dual rankings of the season released today.

The Lions improved their early-season dual meet record to 2-0 after a 21-15 victory at Virginia Tech last Sunday and are ranked ahead of No. 2 Iowa and No. 3 Oklahoma State … also following the Hawkeyes’ 18-16 victory over the Cowboys on Nov. 14.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma State remained No. 1 in WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI), which ranks a team’s placement potential in the NCAA Division I Championships, which will be held March 17-19 in New York City. The Cowboys feature six wrestlers ranked among the Top 8 in their weight class — which would also earn them All-American honors — to lead the field with 83 TPI points.

The Hawkeyes, which also feature six wrestlers in the Top 8, are ranked second in this week’s TPI with 71 points, followed by No. 3 Penn State (4/67.5) and both Virginia Tech and Ohio State, which are tied for fifth place with 63.5 TPI points. The Hokies feature six wrestlers in the Top 8, compared to Ohio State, which has four wrestlers in All-American position at this point in the season.

WIN’s team TPI point totals are based on how many points a wrestler would receive at the NCAAs based on their current individual ranking: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5); 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
