Top-ranked Hawkeyes Top No. 11 Penn State, 18-12

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Senior Bobby Telford recorded a 3-0 decision against sixth-ranked Jimmy Lawson to clinch Iowa’s 18-12 win at No. 11 Penn State on Sunday afternoon.

Penn State had won three-of-four to trim Iowa’s lead to 15-12 before Telford stepped on the mat. He forced a stalling call in the second period for a 1-0 lead, escaped in the third to make it 2-0, and added 1:55 of riding time to earn his eighth win of the season over a ranked opponent.

Iowa lead 12-3 before the break, getting wins at 125, 141, 149 and 157 pounds.

Penn State won decisions at 165 and 174 after the break to trim Iowa’s lead to 12-9 before Sammy Brooks extended the Iowa lead to 15-9 with a 7-1 win at 184.

Morgan McIntosh pulled Penn State back within striking distance with a 7-1 win overNathan Burak at 197 when Telford stepped up and handed Lawson his first loss in 12 matches this season.

Iowa clinched at least a share of the Big Ten Conference regular season crown for the seventh time in eight seasons. The Hawkeyes can win the outright title with a win against Michigan on Friday, Feb. 13, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
