FAIRFAX, Va. (Jan. 31, 2015) – Thanks to pins from Mitchell PortPatrick Jennings and Vic Avery, Edinboro clinched a tie for the Eastern Wrestling League regular season crown on Saturday night with a 31-14 win at George Mason. It marked the first-ever EWL meeting between the two after the Patriots joined the EWL a year ago. Edinboro won its fourth straight dual to improve to 12-4 overall and 5-0 in the EWL. George Mason fell to 7-9 and 2-3, respectively.

Edinboro has one EWL match remaining, hosting Lock Haven on Friday, February 6. The Bald Eagles are 1-1 in EWL action, while Rider is 3-1.

Kory Mines, ranked 17th at 125 lbs., opened the match with a forfeit victory to improve to 26-6. The Patriots would grab a 4-3 lead after the 133 lb. bout as Vince Rodriguez posted a 9-0 major decision over Anthony Rivera (3-12).

Mitchell Port, ranked second at 141 lbs., boosted Edinboro’s lead to 12-4 as he recorded his 11th fall of the season and third in his last four matches with a second period pin over Sahid Kargbo at 4:54. Port is now 28-0 for the season and 124-15 for his career.

George Mason’s Greg Flournoy improved to 18-8 at 157 lbs. as he won a 9-1 major decision over Chase Delande (9-8). The Patriots pulled to 16-11 when Patrick Davis made it back-to-back wins with a 7-6 decision over Casey Fuller at 165 lbs. Fuller nearly rallied from a 5-0 first-period deficit. After tying the match at 6-6 with a takedown with 1minute, 25 seconds to go he released Davis with a minute remaining. He had several opportunities but was unable to post the winning takedown while falling to 14-13.

Any hopes George Mason had of a comeback were squashed when Jennings and Avery recorded falls at 174 and 184 lbs. Jennings would dominate his match against Daniel Mika before finally picking up the fall at 6:30. The redshirt junior is now 25-8 and the victory was the 50th of his career (50-45).

Avery followed with a dominating performance in his own right before finally flattening Derek Dwyer at 6:26 in their 184 lb. match. Ranked 13th, Avery is now 23-6 on the season.

Vince Pickett won his second straight match at 197 lbs. as the junior won a 6-3 decision over Matt Meadows. A takedown by Pickett followed by a reversal by Meadows at the buzzer left it 2-2 after one period. Pickett rode Meadows out in the second, then opened the third with an escape. He added his second takedown midway through the period. The junior had almost six minutes in riding time while improving to 14-13.

The match wrapped up with Jacob kettler (21-8) winning a 5-1 decision over Warren Bosch at heavyweight. In a match that was much closer than the final score indicated, Kettler would grab a 2-0 lead with a takedown two minutes into the first period. After a scoreless second period Kettler chose the top to start the third. Bosch would close the match to 2-1 with a quick escape. He nearly finished several single-leg shots but was unable to finish any, and Kettler rolled off the last one for a takedown with four seconds left.
