2013 Midlands Finals Results

125 Pounds – Iowa’s Thomas Gillman vs. UNA Jarrod Garnett, 6-1

Fourth-seeded Thomas Gillman of Iowa used takedowns in the first and second periods and over three minutes of riding time to easily handle former Virginia Tech All-American Jarrod Garnett. Gillman won 6-1 for the freshman’s first major college tournament title.

133 Pounds – UNI’s Joe Colon pinned Iowa’s Tony Ramos, 2:37

UNI’s Joe Colon created the buzz of the tournament at the :35 mark of the 133-pound final when he used an underhook to defend a Tony Ramos “high-low” shot and powered through last year’s runner-up, quickly putting Ramos to his back in a somewhat of a cow-catcher position. Colon got the fall 12 seconds later for the Midlands title.

141 Pounds – Edinboro’s Mitchell Port major decisioned Illinois’ Steven Rodriguez, 11-2

Edinboro’s Mitchell Port dominated freshman Steven Rodriguez 11-2 for a major in the finals at 141. Port’s first-period tilt gave him a 5-0 lead. He added a takedown in the second and third periods and nearly three minutes of riding time in the convincing win.

149 Pounds – Lehigh’s Mitch Minotti dec. Michigan’s Eric Grajales, 5-4

Redshirt freshman Mitch Minotti of Lehigh got a low single in the tie-breaker phase of overtime to come from behind for the 5-4 win against Michigan’s Eric Grajales. The Wolverine got out in his half of the tiebreaker for the 4-3 lead, but Minotti defeated the fifth-seeded senior for the Midlands title.

157 Pounds – Iowa’s Derek St. John dec. Indiana’s Taylor Walsh, 9-3

Defending NCAA champ Derek St. John of Iowa dominated Indiana’s junior Taylor Walsh with four takedowns and nearly two and half minutes of riding time for a 9-3 win. The Hoosier with over 20 pins on the year had St. John in a couple positions which looked like he may get near-fall points, but St. John’s scrambling ability and great hips kept him in control the entire match.

165 Pounds – North Dakota State’s Steven Monk dec. Iowa’s Nick Moore, 4-3

Steve Monk gave North Dakota State his school’s first Midlands title with a takedown mid-way through third period to give him a 3-2 lead over Iowa’s Nick Moore. The Bison’s 2:17 in riding-time advantage gave him the 4-2 win and championship at 165.

174 Pounds – Iowa’s Mike Evans pinned Columbia’s Shane Hughes, 2:14

Iowa’s Mike Evans got a first-period pin in the finals against Columbia’s unseeded Shane Hughes. The pin set the all-time Midlands’ team scoring record at 187, breaking their own all-time tournament mark of 185 set in 2007. Evans got on the board first with a low single about 50 seconds in the match, then tilted Hughes for three more points about ten seconds later. The fall came at the :46 mark.

184 Pounds – Maryland’s Jimmy Sheptock dec. Iowa’s Ethen Lofthouse, 3-1 SV

The only offensive points of the 184-pound final came 21 seconds into overtime as Maryland’s Jimmy Sheptock got his Terps the first of their two eventual titles by taking down Iowa’s Ethen Lofthouse on an inside single. The only scoring during regulation came when they traded escapes.

197 Pounds – Maryland’s Christian Boley dec. Purdue’s Braden Atwood, 9-5

After falling behind 3-1, Maryland No. 2 seed Christian Boley got a takedown and three-point near-fall midway through the second period for a 6-3 lead. Boley added a takedown with 40 seconds left in the third period to seal the match, taking the 9-5 win and second title in a row for the Terps and coach Kerry McCoy.

HWT – Michigan’s Adam Coon dec. Iowa’s Bobby Telford, 3-2

Michigan standout freshman Adam Coon broke a slow 1-1 match with a takedown with :50 left in the match for the 3-1 lead. Coon shot in on a double which started the ensuing scramble, but the true freshman wasn’t able to finish the shot. But, just when it looked like Telford was about to get two points off the counter, a Coon throw-by gave him the takedown and eventual 3-2 win after Telford got an additional escape. The Wolverine remained undefeated in his first semester for the Maize and Blue.
