WIN’S Nov. 15 Review of Top 30 TPI Teams

The following is an update on the Top 30 teams that appeared in WIN’s Preseason Tournament Power Index. A new TPI will be announced Monday, Nov. 22.

  • 1.            Cornell (0-0) Opens season Nov. 19 vs. Central Michigan; Big Red the plays host to Body Invitational, Nov. 20. Several wrestlers competed unattached at the Binghamton Open, where Kyle Dake (149), Justin Kerber (165), Mack Lewnes (174), Steve Bosak (184) and Cam Simaz (197) won championships. Meanwhile Frank Perrelli (125) finished fourth, Hicks Manson (141) took second, Jesse Shanaman (157) finished third,
  • 2.            Oklahoma State (0-0) at Kaufman-Brand Open, Omaha, Nov. 20
  • 3.            Boise State (1-0-1) Tied Oregon State, 18-18 — Broncos needed a major decision by Andrew Hochstrasser (133) to earn the tie. Boise State won the first four bouts to lead 14-0 before OSU won five straight matches. Boise State was competing without defending national national runner-up Kirk Smith     (184).
  • 4.            Minnesota (0-0) Zach Sanders (125), Mike Thorn (141), Cody Yohn (165), Scott Glasser (174) and Sonny Yohn (197) all won championships at the Bison Open in Fargo, N. D., on Nov. 13.
  • 5.            Wisconsin (0-0) Opens season Nov. 19 at UNC- Greensboro; On Nov. 21, the Badgers face North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Chattanooga in Chapel Hill, N.C.
  • 6.            Oklahoma  (0-0) Five Sooners — Jarrod Patterson (125 pounds), Zack Bailey (141), Matt Lester (157), Tyler Caldwell (174) and Jeff James (184) — all won individual championships atthe Brockport (NY) Open as Oklahoma captured a 12th straight team championship by out-pacing second-place Rutgers 145.5-124.5.
  • 7.            Penn State (2-0) The Lions open the season with wins over Bloomsburg and Lehigh. Five freshmen competed for Penn State, including true freshman Andrew Alton (141) who recorded a pin against the Mountain Hawks. Among the other freshmen, David Taylor also earned a fall at 157 and Ed Ruth gave the Lions a 21-7 with a victory at 174.
  • 8.            Central Michigan (0-0) Opens season Nov. 19 at Cornell
  • 9.            Illinois (1-0) Four straight victories by B.J. Futrell (133), Jimmy Kennedy (141), Eric Terrazas (149) and Kyle Dooley (157) helped the Illini lead 12-3 en route to an 18-13 victory at Missouri.
  • 10.            Ohio State (0-0) The Buckeyes open their dual season Nov. 21 vs. Pitt and Nebraska.
  • 11.            Iowa (0-0) The Hawkeyes open the season Nov. 19 vs. Iowa Central and Coe College in the Iowa City Duals.
  • 12.            Missouri (0-1) True freshman Alan Waters (125) won for the Tigers in the loss to Illinois, Nov. 12. Two days later, he was among 10 Missouri wrestlers to win championships at the Central Missouri Open.
  • 13t            Pittsburgh (0-2) The Panthers, forced to wrestle without All-American Tyler Naumann (141), lost to both Lehigh and Michigan. Among the victors against the Wolverines were Ethan Headlee (174) who upset Justin Zeerip, 3-1 in three OTs and Zach Thomusseit upset Anthony Biondo, 3-0, at 197.
  • 13t            Purdue (1-0-1) A.J. Kissel won a championship at the Michigan State Open, Nov. 13. Among the other Boilermaker place-winners were freshmen Camden Eppert (2nd at 125), senior Sam Patacscil (5th at 149).
  • 15.            Edinboro (1-3-1) Freshman A.J. Schopp won the 133-pound championship at the Michigan State Open, Nov. 14. One day earlier, the Scots won just one of three duals athe the Hershey Duals; beating George Mason and losing to both Virginia Tech and Virginia. Matt Laird (165) won all three matches that day.
  • 16t            Michigan (1-0) Michigan trailed 15-10 before Sean Boyle (125) beatAnthony Zanetta and Zac Stevens (133) scored a major decision to help the Wolverines upset Pittsburgh, 17-15.
  • 16t            Northwestern (3-0) The Wildcats defeated UW Whitewater 37-6, South Dakota State, 41-0, and Northern Iowa, 26-6 at the NU Duals (Nov. 14)
  • 18            Arizona State (2-0) The Sun Devils spent Nov. 13 facing two opponents in two different locations: beating Grand Canyon, 29-8 in Phoenix during the day before defeating Embry-Riddle, 41-6, in Prescott, Ariz. While ASU won 16 of 20 matches, one of their losses came at 157 where 2008 national runner-up Bubba Jenkins lost 5-2 to Embry-Riddle’s Tyler Chang, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA.
  • 19t            Kent State (2-3) The Golden Flashes went 1-2 at the Hershey (Pa.) Duals,Nov. 13: beating North Carolina, 25-12, and losing to Virginia Tech, 25-12, and Virginia, 18-13. Winning all three matches for KSU were 125-pound Nic Bedelyon  (who beat Va Tech’s Jarrod Garnett, 15-0), 197-pound Dustin Kilgore and heavyweight Brendan Barlow.
  • 19t            Lehigh (2-1) The Mountain Hawks lost the 99th all-time meeting withPenn State, but did win five of the ten bouts, including Robert Hamlin’s 4-3 decision against 2009 All-American Quentin Wright at 184 pounds.
  • 19t            Virginia (6-0) Nick Nelson (141), Chris Henrich (174) and Jon Fausey (184) each swept their three matches Nov. 13 as the Cavaliers swept The Citadel (32-6), Kent State (18-13) and Edinboro (25-13). Henrich moved to 107 career wins and needs one victory to match Brent Jones (108, 2005-10) for fourth place in UVa history.
  • 22            NC State (0-0) In his first action since moving from 133 to 141, Darrius Little won the championship at the Wolfpack Open, Nov. 14. 2009 NCAA champion Darrion Caldwell, who    missed last season because of a shoulder injury, is still recuperating and did not compete.
  • 23            Binghamton Nate Schiedel (184) placed second at the WWsport/ Binghamton Open while three teammates — Anwar Goeres (141), Matt Kaylor (165) and Cody Reed (197) — all finished third.
  • 24            Wyoming (0-0) Senior Cole Dallaserra (149) and junior Shane Onufer (165) won championships at the Cowboy Open, hosted by Wyoming, Nov. 13
  • 25            Nebraska (0-0) Tucker Lane (Hwt) won the championship at the Wyoming Open while the Huskers prepare to open their season Nov. 21 against Pitt and Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.
  • 26             Va Tech (4-1) The Hokies won all four matches at the Hershey (Pa.) Duals, topping Kent State (25-12), Edinboro (27-6), The Citadel (24-16) and George Mason (29-12). Among the Va. Tech wrestlers to win in all four duals were freshman Devin Carter (133) and Peter Yates (157). Brian Stephens (149) went 3-0 with a victory over 2010 All-American Torsten Gillespie (Edinboro), 4-3.
  • 27t            Iowa State Jon Reader (174) won his fourth Harold Nichols Open title in his career and was joined on the victory stand by true freshmen Ryak Finch (125) and Kyven Gadson (184), who pinned Nebraska’s Josh Ihnem.
  • 27 t           Oregon State The Beavers won four matches in the 18-18 tie with Boise State, Nov. 13, but three were majors: by Colby Covington (174), Chad Hanke (197) and Clayton Jack (Hwt).
  • 29            Rutgers Heavyweight D.J. Russo on the championship at the  Brockport (NY) Open, where the Scarlet Knights claimed second as a team. Finishing second were Matt Fusco (125), Scott Winston (165) and Dan Rinaldi (184).
  • 30            Indiana Matt Powless (197) won a championship at the Michigan State Open, Nov. 13, when four other Hoosiers finished second: Matt Ortega (133), Kurt Kinser (149), Paul Young (157) and Ricky Alcala (Hwt).
