Wisconsin’s Andrew Crone, South Dakota State’s Alex Kocer and Oregon State’s Joey Delgado, both unseeded, scored the biggest upsets of the first round.
Kocer edged Edinboro’s No. 8 seed Pat Lugo, 6-5, to advance to Thursday night’s second round while Delgado also won by the identical score to upset Oklahoma’s No. 11 seed Davion Jeffries. Meanwhile, the Badger stunned No. 12 seed Sam Speno of NC State, 8-5

Three wrestlers scored pins at this weight class:
- Ohio State’s Micah Jordan, seeded No. 4 pinned North Carolina’s Troy Heilman in 2:26;
- Iowa’s Brandon Sorensen scored the first fall for the Hawkeyes when the No. 5 seed flattened Matt Zovistoski of Appalachian State in 2:11;
- Central Michigan’s Justin Oliver pinned Illinois’ Eric Barone in 4:47.
