Grand View of NAIA captures fifth-straight NWCA duals title

The top two teams in the NAIA met in the finals of the NWCA National Duals, Jan. 9 in Ft. Wayne, Ind., but there was no doubt what school remains the most dominant in this level of college wrestling as top-ranked Grand View outscored four opponents 179-20 to capture a fifth-straight team championship.

grand view group shot            After winning 28 out of the first 30 individual bouts over Missouri Baptist, Great Falls and Campbellsville, the Vikings of Des Moines, Iowa, actually trailed second-ranked Indiana Tech, 9-6, in the final dual — after the Warriors’ No. 4-ranked Matthew Miller pinned second-ranked Walker Marshall in 1:28 of their 141-pound dual.

The NAIA can rank more than one individual per school at a weight and that paid off for Grand View at 149 pounds in the finals as Midlands champion Andrew Long — ranked No. 1 at 141 pounds — moved up and pinned Indiana Tech’s Justin Atkinson in 1:39 to give the Viking a 12-9 lead.

Grand View then won five out of the final six bouts, including Dean Broghammer’s pin against Kegan Clark-Sanchez in 39 seconds of their heavyweight final.
