Here’s how 106-pounders finished in the WIN rankings last year, minus those who graduated:

1.                   Nick Suriano                                    So                  Oradell, NJ Bergen Catholic

2.                   Luke Pletcher                                    So                  Greater Latrobe, PA

3.                   Rudy Yates                                    So                  Chicago, IL Brother Rice

4.                   Jack Mueller                                    So                  Dallas, TX Trinity Christian Academy

5.                   Kyle Bierdumpfel                  So                  Ramsey, NJ Don Bosco Preparatory

6.                   Jose Rodriguez                                    Jr                  Massillon, OH Perry

7.                   Austin Assad                                    Jr                  Broadview Heights, OH Brecksville

8.                   Adrian Camposano                  Sr                  Fresno, CA Central

9.                  Chad Red                                    So                  New Palestine, IN

10.                   Miguel Silva                                    Sr                  Plainfield, IL South

11.                   Devin Brown                                    Jr                  Saegertown, PA

12.                   Luke Karam                                    So                  Bethlehem, PA Catholic

13.                   Gionn Peralta                                    Sr                  Vacaville, CA

14.                  Christian Moody                  Jr                  Collinsville, OK

15.                   Vincent Elizalde                                    Sr                  Brawley, CA

17.                   Eli Stickley                                    Jr                  St. Paris, OH Graham

20.                   Geoff Doback                                    So                  Brandon, FL

Will any of them still be at 106 this season? Highly unlikely. Only Silva, Brown and Karam competed at this weight in the off-season … and in events with a weight allowance. Assad began the off-season competing at 126, and appeared in the Junior Nationals at 120. Rodriguez, Red, Peralta and Doback also competed in the off-season at 120, and the rest could be found at 113.

Given the number of freshmen always seen here and the number of wrestlers who grow out of this weight class year after year, this weight class always will be the most difficult to project.

Daton Fix (top) of Oklahoma won the 113-pound freestyle in the Cadet Nationals just days after he won the 106-pound Cadet Greco title in Fargo this summer.

Daton Fix (top) of Oklahoma won the 113-pound freestyle in the Cadet Nationals just days after he won the 106-pound Cadet Greco title in Fargo this summer.

Off-season OW: Brown. He dominated the FILA Cadet National freestyle, going 6-0 with five technical falls and a 10-4 decision. He also was unbeaten in the AAU Scholastic Duals at Disney.

Five others who could be back at the weight with big off-season credentials:

Joey Cisneros, senior, Visalia (Calif.) Redwood

One match away from placing in the state tournament last year, Cisneros went 14-0 in the Junior National Duals, scoring 11 technical falls, and won the Southern Plains double title at this weight. The double Junior Nationals runner-up came close in his two finals, losing 10-10 on criteria in Greco-Roman and 6-4 in freestyle.

Daton Fix, freshman, Sand Springs (Okla.) Charles Page

He may be at 113 after his Cadet National freestyle title, but winning at Fargo at 106 and 113 is a pretty rare double.  But he did win the Southern Plains double title at this weight. And since a big part of life is just showing up, Fix earned eight wins over wrestlers also considered rankings, including Texas All-Americans Isaac Jimenez and Jack Mueller and Minnesotan Mitchell McKee.

Spencer Lee, freshman, Murrysville (Pa.) Franklin Regional

He, too, may be at 113, but his impressive wins over Mueller and Fix in the FILA Cadet National freestyle final were more than enough to get him on the list. Going 14-0 in the Cadet National Duals without allowing a point didn’t hurt, either.

Joey Prata, sophomore, Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher’s School

Fifth in the National Prep Championships last year, Prata won the Cadet Nationals and split with another wrestler on our list, Danny Vega. He also went 12-2 in the Cadet National Duals. He competed at 100 pounds, so he’s likely to remain at this class.

Danny Vega, sophomore, Oro Valley (Ariz.) Ironwood Ridge

As a 100-pounder, Vega, too, is likely to be back at this weight. He lost to Prata in the Greco-Roman final, but beat him 16-7 in the third round of freestyle. Ineligible the second half of his freshman season after starting 13-3, one of his losses came to Cisneros, who pinned him in the Reno (Nev.) Tournament of Champions quarterfinals in December.

Next week: 113 pounds.
